Hair Loss & BJJ?

I thinned out a few years back and just buzz it now.....But I will be using the excuse that it is from BJJ. Girls will eat it up! I think we need shirts "BJJ made me bald"

BTW it does make my knees bald

the tip of my head is fucked. Between playing football for 10 years and doing bjj for 2 and a half the top part of my forehead is like a callous from hell lol. its always rubbed raw. So maybe, thats where mine is fucked hahaahh

Babies lose their hair after being born from just lying on their backs turning their heads, so I guess it's possible. :p

LOL, Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you weren't a piece of shit.....

Correction: More like a pile of shit.

It's okay, now I'm a significantly less fat and significantly smaller pile of shit with a blue belt.

Not bad for someone who could barely get through the running part of the warm up 7 months ago.

TS - I dunno, BJJ usually accelerates hair growth. Check out this WEC fighter - has a sick ground game, and his hair just keeps getting longer:

Power mullet FTW.

It hasn't effected my hair line but my mom's dad had a full head of hair till he died..... I keep my hair buzzed though so who knows...

what about your mom's mom? i have always been told that the women carry the "bald" gene and it didn't have as much to do with the men in the family? my mom has really thin hair, so did my grandma, hers, etc... i said F it and started shaving it at 22. i think i could grow a pretty wicked skullet if i tried to though.

Theres already a BJ Penn thread on the main page.....

I gotta agree with the OP.. I've noticed this too with a lot of BJJ guys who have been doing it for a few years. They've all said their hair has thinned a lot faster since rollin'.

I believe that rolling can exacerbate the loss of hair. I'm dealing with the same thing. Hair has been coming out at the hairline for a couple years now, slowly and surely. And I've noticed after rolling I can run my fingers through my hair and a good little number of hairs will be stuck to my hand. More than is usual. Its simple, as it happens with hair loss your hair follicles slowly constrict, and over time cut off blood supply to the shaft. The hair becomes much thinner, the bulb gets smaller. Then by itself or with some friction it can pop out of the follicle. Pulling your head out of triangles and chokes and whatever else comes up is going to cause a bit of friction on the scalp and take some of the thinner, weaker hairs.

If it's in your genes it's going to happen. Keep training, buzz your hair low like Statham. Instead of looking looking like a worn out old man you'll look like warrior who has been through a rock tumbler.:icon_chee

I have to say, my hair seemed to be thinning when I started. After a while, it actually got somewhat fuller, although my forehead grew a little, if you know what I mean. I try to keep it short, though, since it helps with hygiene, escaping the armbars, and not letting me look like too much of a creeper. Jiu jitsu improved my health and I think it improved my hair, but the genes will eventually catch up to me.

I just buzz my hair off every month or so, but the hairline's in the same place. I'm thinking it's not doing much to my hair.

Hair loss has absolutly nothing to do with friction. It is because of hormones and genes.

Hey, play nice! If people want to blame it on doing BJJ, let them. :p (Probably feels better than thinking it is caused by aging!)

Don't worry about hair loss because of BJJ.
I heard that when you reach blackbelt and the 4th stripe, you can turn into a super saiyan and get a big mane.

i think if your hair is not in as tight it you may shed when grappling. i think it may make you lose ones that are not going to stick around too long anyway.

I suggest to buzz it

i did-not sure how acurate the site is. there may be a lot of success stories but knowing my luck, i'll be the one to get cancer and lose my hair.

Report on Nioxin Ingredients, Side Effects and Usage by AskDocWeb

AskDocWeb: We do not recommend Nioxin because it is on the consumer list of products and chemicals known or suspected of causing cancer, birth defects and other negative health affects. The Breast Cancer Fund says no to the use of Nioxin, Friends of the Earth say no to the use of Nioxin, and Health Care Without Harm says no to the use of Nioxin.

further down the page:

We are not saying that Nioxin causes cancer, consumer protection groups are saying that one or more of the ingredients in it is known or suspected of causing cancer. In looking at that long list of ingredients the first one that draws attention is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Several consumer protection groups have identified this as being a harmful ingredient. Toxicology research by the OSHA, NTP, and IARC supports the conclusions of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) and the American Cancer Society that pure Sodium Laureth Sulfate is not a carcinogen. The objection arises because Sodium Laureth Sulfate and products containing it have been found to contain low levels of 1,4-dioxane. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen because of the observed increased incidence of cancer in controlled animal studies. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane, it is not required by federal law. The manufacturer of Nioxin has not made it clear if 1,4-dioxane is removed from their product or not.

Ain't that a bitch, and I ordered the 'stage 1 system' of this stuff off Amazon last week.
