Hair Loss & BJJ?

Hitting middle age, and your hair loss is accelerating. Hmmm... must be the grappling!

Well i just thought it would be more gradual...i know it's a futile effort lol, but anything to slow down the process!!

I actually started BJJ just to keep fit, i never had a care about self defence or learning to fight, ect... .. i never realized how much i would enjoy training though and I regret I did not start when I was younger.

No. If anything, my hair has been growing it better since I've been training. I'm in a lot better shape though. Before I started training I was an extremely fat piece of shit.

I doubt training would increase a man's testosterone enough to trigger hair loss.

It's definitely not your head gear.

LOL, Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you weren't a piece of shit.....

It hasn't effected my hair line but my mom's dad had a full head of hair till he died..... I keep my hair buzzed though so who knows...

talk about trolling...

what, are you going to tell us how profound you are at trolling?

anyways, if this is serious, scalp stimulation increases hair growth, but if you are skidding around on your head, obviously you will do damage that will prevent hair growth in that area. I honestly cant imagine what sort of trauma you would be putting your head through that would cause this sort of result.

My teach is in his early 30's, been a bjj player for 18 years, and has one of the thickest heads of hair I have seen. We have an older guy in class, who is a purple belt (not sure how long he has been playing) and again, thick head of hair.

your hair falling out increases its rate as age increases. correlation =/= cause

Thanks man.. it was an honest question.

Those dudes with a thick head of hair will never lose it, no matter how much friction... but my hairline is receding and i never had thick hair.. so i thought maybe the headgear friction would be pulling at the hair... it was just a concern/thought, and i wanted to see if anyone else had maybe had a similar experience...

It seems from all the responses I will just continue to wear the headgear and chalk it up to genetics... so my question was answered on the forum..

Thanks again guys!

try taking nioxin pills, and use shampoo with nioxin in it. It helps what hair you have grow quicker and thicker, but I havent heard anything about recovering lost hair.

Proably just a coincidence. I feel like the amount of friction caused my grappling isn't consistent enough to cause significant balding. I have heard that dreadlocks can accelerate balding, though.

I have a ton of body hair, and all the friction from BJJ makes me shed that like crazy (I wear spandex rashguard so it just accumulates under it, I'd never roll without a rashie under my gi) but no affect on my head hair.

^this! i do this everyday and have a luscious ass fro and furry hobbit feet.

no-jp. taking medications for hair is silly imo. genetics will prevail so just flow with the go and embrace the baldness or rock the comb over.

I would just go ahead and buzz it, the ladies love it :icon_chee and you wont have to deal with it ripping out when grappling.

i did-not sure how acurate the site is. there may be a lot of success stories but knowing my luck, i'll be the one to get cancer and lose my hair.

Report on Nioxin Ingredients, Side Effects and Usage by AskDocWeb

AskDocWeb: We do not recommend Nioxin because it is on the consumer list of products and chemicals known or suspected of causing cancer, birth defects and other negative health affects. The Breast Cancer Fund says no to the use of Nioxin, Friends of the Earth say no to the use of Nioxin, and Health Care Without Harm says no to the use of Nioxin.

further down the page:

We are not saying that Nioxin causes cancer, consumer protection groups are saying that one or more of the ingredients in it is known or suspected of causing cancer. In looking at that long list of ingredients the first one that draws attention is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Several consumer protection groups have identified this as being a harmful ingredient. Toxicology research by the OSHA, NTP, and IARC supports the conclusions of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) and the American Cancer Society that pure Sodium Laureth Sulfate is not a carcinogen. The objection arises because Sodium Laureth Sulfate and products containing it have been found to contain low levels of 1,4-dioxane. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen because of the observed increased incidence of cancer in controlled animal studies. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane, it is not required by federal law. The manufacturer of Nioxin has not made it clear if 1,4-dioxane is removed from their product or not.

@Etheral I already found a girl stupid enough to marry me so at least don't have to worry about the looks so much any more... haha, but I will go ahead an get the buzz...

Regarding Nioxin, Rogaine and all that stuff.... the thought has crossed my mind.. but I fear cancer more than baldness!

BassAckwards' luscious ass fro and furry hobbit feet don't sound appealing either haha

On another note, i am totally and utterly surprised no one has posted anything about "Hair Club for Men" on here just to mock my post and poke some fun...

ive never heard of anything like this before. maybe your just aging quicker and quicker

For what it's worth, I know a guy at my academy who has ten plus years in capoeira, and he has a hairless streak down the middle of his head. Apparently comes from damage he caused doing various head-related capoeira cartwheel things. To use a technical term. So...I guess if you were bridging an awful lot with all your weight on your head, or something?

...otherwise? No. ^_^

Take care,

Oli

Not conventional hair loss with a receding hairline but every time I roll my ponytail comes out or gets pulled or tangled and I lose massive amounts of hair that can sometimes be found on the mat  Every time I roll I think about Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta and how I want to shave my head.
