For those wondering, Gokor Chivichyan is famous in the MMA and Grappling circles for his unique style of judo which is mixed with catch wrestling and sambo. In his prime, Gokor was considered Judo Gene Lebells number 1 student.

The thing was though, he was suppose to fight in early UFC but that never happened. I was wondering had he fought, how would he do and if he did well, would todays MMA gyms teach a different style of grappling?

This is Gokors fight:

Gokor actually trained my first grappling coach. By all accounts the man was a SAVAGE.

It was actually lol

Right on! I have heard so many great things from him! I have talked to Gokor a lot and he always mentions that his two finest students turned teacher are Max Bishop and Harout Terzyan!

Yeah I only got to train with Max for about a year incredibly knowledgeable. Very intense individual but I still use a lot of what he taught me and that has been years and years ago.

heard great things re Max as well,
Gokor is a stud, even couple yrs ago at 50 could move so slow and tap guys like me and Jay Heiron.....because he can do it slow, people do not realize how good that actually makes him.

If he did, throw to heavy top game, transitions, and total body submissions would have been normal..........

a much better overall grappling game for MMA or Street than most of soft flop to butt bjj gyms teach

Yeah you are dead on it is a million times more effective than standard BJJ when it comes to self defense.

Sounds he taught you guys some Kill Bill shit.
LOL it is far ahead of most grappling I've done at other gyms. When I train somewhere new and hit certain techniques they'll be like where did you learn that?

Right on! People forget that Gokor is also an AMAZING sambo/catch wrestler. His style is exciting and great for developing cardio since it promotes scrambles and creative ways of looking for submissions and that's thanks to the catch wrestling and the sambo.

He was good but I can't see him beating someone like Royce Gracie. Royce subs him on the ground and it's pretty even standing up/ wrestling.

Who knows? It would've been cool to see though.

I think he would've been one of the top guys.

Why didn't he compete in the early UFC's? Would Rorion have allowed him to compete?

I am not sure about the ground game. I mean Royce is a legit master when it comes to ground grappling but when it comes to stand up grappling, its Gokor all day!
