Add another giant bug to the list of things Washington state is working to handle right now, and experts say it could quickly spread across the nation.

"This imminent danger of infestation seriously endangers the agricultural and horticultural industries of the state of Washington and seriously threatens the economic well-being and quality of life of state residents,"

"Large (Asian gypsy moth) infestations can completely defoliate trees"

"This defoliation can severely weaken trees and shrubs, making them more susceptible to disease. Repeated defoliation can lead to the death of large sections of forests, orchards and landscaping."

We may have another insect to worry about besides ‘murder hornets’

our ships need certificates certifying we are Asian Gypsy Moth free if we recently traded them in Russian Pacific waters

Why do these invasive bugs keep showing up in Washington first?

Maybe the ports need to hire smarter workers.

Washington gonna Florida.

They prefer the term Roma moths

Shit, man. How is business?
Could be better of course but in our segment , we've done remarkably well. We recognized that rates were going to drop in our industry so about 2 months ago we started undercutting the market by a small percentage. We booked everything and when our competition realised what happened they had no business for their ships so we chartered many of their ships at huge discounts lol. They are panicking right now and we have employed all of our ships till August with the last of the decent paying cargoes. It was a gamble on our part so let's see if the industry bounces back by mid summer.

And how has that been going so far? I have to imagine it's a very slow road back to any sense of normalcy, and I'm wondering if you're running into newer and more onerous requirements and regulations?

lots of layoffs, competing companies insolvent, new fuel regulations capping sulphur content, all in all it's one of the most tumultuous years in shipping I've seen in my 24 years doing this. and yes it will be a slow road back, if it ever comes back.

I can already see HR chomping at the bit (even in our group) to rewrite corporate policy with regards to our daily working habits. procedure for sales and business development will change fundamentally due to restrictions imposed by corporate regulations. this has been a world changing event, which we notice in shipping before most others do, last few times were 9/11 and in 2008

They've been in my area for many years. They had airplanes spraying for them and there are expensive treatments being applied to the roots but nothing seems to work. There are many things killing trees these days.
