He’s not really a lead though. I doubt he would’ve been chosen to lead future Nolan projects after Nolan became more established

A movie like LA Confidential showed how he stacked up to acting heavyweights like Spacey and Crowe. He was really good in that and his character was essentially the main character but he was probably the 3rd or 4th best in that movie.

I suspect the main issue is he doesnt really have "likable film star charisma", he's just a bit too dark and intense to make it as a blockbuster lead in Hollywood relative to someone like Bale or Leo who can mix those aspects together.
