Imo this would have been a hard fight for GSP. Obviously he had to relinquish the belt because of his colitis but had they fought it would have been a great fight

Whittaker was the interim champion at the time and had just beaten Romero in a 5 round fight. The UFC was planning the unification bout but then promoted Whittaker to undisputed champion after GSP's illness forced him to take a step away from the sport

This is what the tale of the tape would have looked like at the time:

GSP

Record: 26-2
Age: 36
Height: 5'9
Weight: 185lbs
Reach: 76 inches

Whittaker

Record: 19-4
Age: 26
Height: 6'0
Weight: 185lbs
Reach: 73.5 inches

I think GSP beats most of the top 10 MW but Rob is a bad match up for him.

One of the worst matchups for GSP at WW or MW
Whittaker or Yoel

I believe he can beat Adesanya, Brunson and Vettori took him down and GSP is a much, much better wrestler. But he would have problems with Whittaker and Yoel.

Also, GSP is small for MW.
He put a lot of size when he beat Bisping and Bisping used to be a LHW.
But guys like Weidman, Jacare, Rockhold, Yoel are just much bigger than him.

Same for Gas
The guy has good cardio for MW, has KO power, has a hell of a chin and good recovery
Also good wrestling
But so small for MW

Whittaker absolutely murders gsp. Even Soldier of God couldn't keep him down.

I’d be shocked if GSP managed to win. Really rough fight for a past prime GSP. The thing that annoyed me was that it was so obvious that he was going to vacate if he beat Bisping. I knew that he wouldn’t go up against Whittaker or Romero. I can understand why however.

I actually disagree

Not saying he'd win, but GSP might have had a chance.

GSP would have got wrecked by Yoel, Rockhold, etc.
You named two fighters and then said etc. Two fighters who’s styles are totally different. Who’s the etc?

Yeah would have been a rough fight for the current GSP. Even though he beat Bisping - you could tell that MW is really not where GSP was supposed to be, he looked bloated.

Prime GSP likely beats Whittaker

2017 called, they want their thread back

At welter? Gsp mauls him. Rob was a mediocre 170er. At mw it would be 60/40,though. Robert is damn good but he has never fought a guy as smart and as good at mixing it up like GSP. What makes you think that he would not end on his back? Who has he fought with that level of mma wresslin? Romero hardly uses any wresslin, he is in love with being a boxer and his fight iq is beyond terrible.

GSP only thrived against very weak competition.
That was pretty dumb to say.
