Throwback GSP vs Nick Diaz

I was just watching Diaz v Semtex, gonna try to squeeze this one in before DWCS.

It wasn't. The "bit" of disdain I have for Nick sniffed out some anti-GSP/pro-Nick shit that I couldn't let pass...

...to wit, this is overstating it. Like 20 seconds before GSP landed maybe his cleanest and hardest punch, snapping Nick's head back with a Machida-esque straight. It was all GSP for nearly three full rounds, until the last minute of Round 3 when GSP hit Nick with a few jabs, Nick started flicking his glove at GSP (I don't deign call what Nick was throwing "jabs" since he was literally just flicking his glove at GSP's face), GSP looked up at the clock, and Nick threw a one-two. It's right here timestamped:

GSP looks up, Nick throws a one-two, GSP throws a counter hook, Nick tries to swarm him, GSP shuts him down with a TD. It literally spans 15 seconds, from 1:02 left in the round to :47. Barely anything lands clean and nothing lands hard. This isn't Fujita nearly decapitating Fedor or even Condit turning the tide on GSP. It's a 15-second burst of very little culminating with Nick getting taken down, again.

This is what Firas was getting at: GSP was such an effective striker because he was such an effective wrestler. He mixed things up to where you didn't know if he was coming in with a shot or a punch. To keep going for the legs will not only increase his chances of scoring TDs, it'll also increase his chances of landing strikes. GSP did the same thing to Alves, scoring with strikes then shooting TDs to where Alves had no idea what GSP was coming at him with.

That's what GSP did best, mixing strikes and TDs (though I'm sure you're seeing Alves having "a bit of success" ;)). Firas was just reminding him what butters his bread, not panicking in response to the awesome beatdown Nick was putting on him because of 15 seconds of barely anything.

Granted, GSP raised the bar so high with his dominance that 15 seconds of someone throwing punches and even landing a few looks like extraordinary success, but I'm trying to keep things in the proper perspective with respect to the crazy high level of GSP's performances.

I'm sensing a burning desire on your part to describe everything GSP did as him laying on people, and as I keep making you rephrase, you keep coming back to it. I'm going to stop engaging you now and just let you have your opinion on GSP.

That’s fine, you don’t have to engage, but I am going to retort.

There’s no desire for me to categorize GSP that way at all. My opinion on GSP, for the record, is that he has a great argument for being the GOAT.

<RIP>
GSP is a perfectly good choice for overall MMA GOAT, let alone WW GOAT. Being WW GOAT is a given.

Absolute GOAT level career. Great argument for being the GOAT. Big fan of GSP, always.

There’s not another WW even close to surpassing GSP. GSP is unquestionably WW GOAT, and has a great argument for being MMA GOAT.

Our entire back and forth, was over this post of mine:

Enjoyed the bit of success Nick had on the feet in rd 4. Sent GSP right back to shooting TDs.

(EDIT: it was rd 3)
Not only are you taking issue with Nick Diaz even having one bit of success in that fight, which is a crazy take, but you’re taking issue with what I subjectively enjoyed in the fight.

With that, I bid you adieu.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to describe his career, i do think GSP is the clean goat and really followed almost entirety of his ufc career outside a couple early fights.

BUT...

I was talking to the other guy I was responding to along with you.

I remember. It didn't happen that long ago <lol>

Your post read like an anti-GSP/pro-Nick troll post. You didn't say anything about GSP arguably being the GOAT - and, for the record, this is what conversations and debates are for, they tend to bring out what people think and why they think it - you just said that you enjoyed Nick having so much success that he made GSP panic wrestle. You shouldn't be surprised someone who opened by saying Nick Diaz and BJ Penn were his two most hated fighters took issue with that.

With that, I bid you adieu.

I remember it like it was yesterday, that entire week was amazing because if you guys remember leading up to it the week before we had Wanderli Silva vs Stann which was a brutal KO and great fight, it was so violent, and then we had Mark Hunt 5'10'' KO 7 foot Struve and Diego Sanchez vs Gomi in a crazy fight and many other great fights that fight night was soooooooooooo good and then it led into the GSP vs Diaz PPV card, the excitement and buzz during that week was intense!!.

We was all buzzing and going crazy about that UFC Fight Night event and then before we knew it we was into the GSP vs Diaz PPV card. Such a great time.

well to be honest, it sorta started from his koscheck fight...i was very excited for that fight....layed on him for three rounds...

Not really. GSP finished three of his next four fights, and the lone decision during that stretch was the beating he put on Fitch.

The whole 'GSP got boring' or 'GSP laid on people' after the Serra loss was quite overblown, IMHO.

All good. I’ll fully admit I’m a bigger Nick Diaz fan than GSP fan. I’m a big Spider fan too, and I thought I didn’t care who won when he fought Nick—but as soon as the fight started, I found myself cheering for Nick. So yeah, I absolutely wanted Nick to win that fight with GSP, I won’t deny that.

As for everything else, we’re all good.

My heyday as a hardcore fan was 2005-2007, while I was still in high school. Once I went to college, I lost my intense connection. Still a huge fan for many more years, but not as intense as this. I barely remember this time at all, though I of course loved seeing Hunt find success again after that six-fight skid. (I remember watching 144 at a bar and his KO of Kongo was the very picture of "There are levels to this shit" with his K-1 level striking.) But after I talked so much about how I hated Nick Diaz and BJ Penn, you just had to fucking bring up Diego Sanchez and round out my Unholy Trinity of my most hated fighters, and you had to bring up him getting that bullshit decision. He's lucky he didn't have to face The Fireball Kid and just got The Embers Kid with very little fire left. But yeah, Wanderlei KOing Stann was amazing. It's too bad he couldn't have stayed retire on that big W.

He needed a win after the title loss.

You said it all started with the Kos fight...and I pointed GSP finished 3 of 4 after that, with a beating given in the lone decision, so clearly that is not the case He tapped Hughes inside two. He broke Serra inside two (to the point that no one needed a trilogy). He beat up Fitch. He made BJ quit on the stool.

Even in other fights, GSP was hardly just 'laying on people'. He threatened with subs in almost every round against Hardy...and did he even take Kos down in the first half of their rematch, when he broke Kos' orbital? He pieced him up with the jab all night.

To be fair, GSP took the fight seriously. Anderson very clearly did not.
Huh? Spider failed the drug test for roids. Going above and beyond is not something you do when you aren't taking a fight seriously.

was so much fun watching how frustrated nick got during that fight. 'don't be scared homie ' - quit tackling me!'

Anderson was coming back from a horrific injury. Who knows where his head was at? His performance was clearly not all there. He gave no fucks.

No doubt Nick was bad matchup fo George but still beat him. I thought Bisping was going to beat him but Geroge won, he never seizes to impress but lets face it he is a tiny WW and guys today would be way too much for him.

Diaz spent a lot of time calling out GSP while Diaz was in Strikeforce. I guess he never anticipated what was to come with the UFC buying SF.

GSP outstruck the striker and won dominantly. It wasn't even close, Nick ran his mouth and lost convincingly.
And GSP refused a drug test.

GSP dominated Díaz more than Anderson did, although Anderson was one weight class bigger.

To be fair, GSP took the fight seriously. Anderson very clearly did not.
Anderson was 40 years old and came back from having his leg broken in half.

<6>

By going there you open the door for ”Mittrione did better against Fedor than prime Crocop!”.

Yea, this was a solid fight with an interesting match up. GSP fought smart and pretty much disarmed Nick that night. I think Nick started losing his grip already here, since it was all poisoned water bottles and conspiracy weigh ins…

Def a boring fight. GSP if you think about it turned what on paper was a great fight into not so great fights lol against BJ 2 and Diaz.

It really took Hendricks to really take it to GSP, which was a great fight on paper and a great fight period.

Or Fitch who got beat the fudge out of him and kept on soldiering.
GSP Penn 2 Lived up to expectations. You´re just a noob.
