I forgot about Battle Royale as a good Japanese movie. Still seem few and far between compared to Korean movies.

I've always loved the Japanese sci-fi monster movies (Gamera, Godzilla vs. _____ ).
 
This is awesome, and nobody ever talks about it.

Everything by Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, Ozu, Teshigahara...

Go look at the Criterion collection, pick out any movie made from ~1940-1970 by a Japanese director, and you can feel confident it's a very good movie.

Specific recommendations: Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Rashomon, Sansho the Bailif (in the UK I think they just kept the Japanese title, Sansho Dayu), Ugetsu, Tokyo Story, Good Morning, Woman in the Dunes, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

I'm a big Japanese film buff.

BTW, Ryuichi Sakamoto is an underrated film composer. The theme from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is so beautiful.

if you take the classics (Korusawa,Mizoguchi) into account japan has put out more quality stuff.
korean cinema really came on post 2000
 
Koreans are the best filmmakers in Asia right now IMO.

I Saw the Devil (one of the most extreme movies ever made with mainstream actors)

Plus many more. For some reason all the top Korean movies that people talk about were made after 2000. It's insane how Korean cinema suddenly burst onto the scene from seemingly nothing.

The Man from Nowhere is an amazing film, one of the best I have ever seen, and it was the first thing to come to mind when I saw the thread. It also has the best filmed knife fight in existence, at least in my opinion.

The Raid, if you haven't seen it, is a great action film, as is Ong Bak. These films are not from your desired countries, but cool nonetheless. There is plenty for you to check out, and I hope you enjoy everything you see.

I loved the Man From Nowhere it was a great action movie with some emotional punches to the gut , was really pissed when I thought the worst had happened then when he unleashed his fury in that great final action sequence I was rooting for him big time and it delivered.
 
The Warrior. It's a Korean epic in the style of Kurosawa, very gritty and emotionally engaging.
