Been rolling once a week at this gym for about 6 weeks. This evening we had a smaller class size (probably people gone for Thanksgiving), so we did 20 minutes of circut training and then had back to back open mat sparring.

Any input is appreciated, just if you refference the video please use the time within the video so I know the appropriate frame to be watching from. :icon_chee

I am the one in all black.

I stopped watching after you tried to arm triangle the guy from inside his guard, then tried to slam him out of an arm bar then punched him in the face.

Haha, I have a bad habit of doing the awkward arm triangle from inside someone's gaurd. Watch the rest, give me pointers.

How long have you been training?

6 weeks, no prior grappling experience.

Okay, you sit too upright in the guard making you easier to sweep.

Dont slam from an armbar, its a dick move.

You seem to be going for subs that you dont really know how to do, giving up position.

looks like you try to rush and spaz a lil bit, trying to use brute force, thats typical for new guys.

Just focus on learning and not so much on winning.

You dig?

1.) Isn't posturing up a good thing?

2.) I'll try not to let my inner monkey get the best of me on armbars.

6.) I dig. Thank you for the input, appreciated.

So you are new at this huh? Let's see
1. You seemed to have two bad habits while in the other guy's guard, like putting your hand on the mat or cross your arm pass his centerline.
2. When he sweeped you with with the Old School from half guard, what you should do is that instead of push his head, post on his hip and shrimp out.
3. The other guy get half-guard back way too easily. Grapevine his leg or something to establish your mount first then attack.
4. Arm triangle in the guard? lol
5. When you get arm triangle, push your arm down and place your hand on your ear as if you are answering a phone and keep it there. This will at least create some sort of barrier prevent him from fully lock in the arm triangle.
6. Flatten him while in his half guard to prevent him from attack.

EDIT: Posturing while grappling is a case-by-case. You don't need to posture everytime.
That's all for now. I see way more than these 6 though.

Not the way you did, when you posture in guard, sit on your heels and look away from your partner, use your feel peripherals to see him.

Sick de la baby guard in the background at 2:00.

Seriously though, who changes a diaper on the mats?!

Hahah. The owner's kids were in today, he must had decided to bring them in anticipating it would be a small class this evening. (just three guys including myself) Tough Hmong family, I wouldn't worry about it too much, heh.

Don't keep crossing your arm past his centerline. At 0:25 you do this and he is too hesitant to break his guard and properly arm bar. Against anyone slightly experienced, your arm is probably his.

Lady Gaga, changing diapers on the mat, arm triangles in the guard...

this was a brave post.

Dont ever slam a training partner, leave your ego at the door and do a correct escape

I hope you're aware that pretty much everything you did was lacking in a way or another. Is there a specific aspect of your game you'd like to work on?

Hahah, why thank you.

Wasn't really an ego thing, I just didn't know it was frowned upon. In a sport where choking and joint locks are the norm, I wouldn't expect a slam to be too far from the norm either. ---But now I do know.

Yeah, perfecting stronger positioning (being able to hold positions better, etc) and transitions.

You like kind of like a skinny Shane Carwin to me.

Hope that helps.

Someone with no brain, manners or hygiene. I'd have told her to GTFO doing that. Aside from the awful hygiene issues with changing dirty diapers on a grappling mat baby shit is possibly one of the most disgusting smells imaginable.

Most schools don't allow leg locks with six weeks of grappling, but to each their own I suppose. If I could give any advice, it would be to be tighter when inside someone's guard.

If your opponent were a bit more experienced, you would have been arm barred repeatedly.

Latching onto a leg and just cranking is a great way to hurt training partners. Was there a coach or instructor monitoring this sparring?
