Grappling Pants

I'm just wondering why Shinya Aoki stlye pants aren't more common in grappling and MMA that doesn't use the unified rules. It seems to me that they have the advantages of Gi pants with the friction gained in half guard, rubber guard, triangles and 'platas. At the same time they don't have the disadvantage Gi pants have in regards to being used for handles. If given the option to wear shorts, gi, or grappling pants what would you choose?
