Gran Torino (2009)

Movie could've been great if someone else directed it.

Clint's themes are so cheesy and obvious. He has no subtlety.

Plus all the Asians in the movie weren't professional actors and it really showed.

Despite these flaws, it's always fun to see Clint portray a grizzled old badass

But Eastwood's acting and the story does enough for me to overlook the bad performances and focus on the good.

i was expecting someone to comment on this, clint is tight with movie budgets reputedly, and it showed in the performances in this film. Still a great film but had shades of amateurishness, especially the two asian actors. Their likeability made up for it.

not me, honestly, there are so many different types of asians i can't keep them straight inspite of them getting pissed when I guess wrong. there was a russian girl who turned beet red when i asked if she was chinese, she said no and so i dug myself in deeper, 'Japanese? Korean? etc.., she was pissed and said she was from russia before she stormed off.

Some Russians look very Asian. Probably because they have a lot of Asian ancestors and don’t know it. Look at Boris Yeltsin. He looked Chinese.

Agree to some extent. Thao's acting was not very good at all.
 
white people running around calling each other racists and questioning whether everything is racist is pathetic and they need to wash their mouths out with buckshot.

Do you think there are black people running around in black communities pointing out every time a black person is doing/saying something that could be interpreted as racist to another race? What about Latinos or Asians? Nope. It's not happening. It's only weak white people encouraging a free for all on white people.

If people really wanted to stamp out racism then it would be one rule for all across the board and they wouldn't be giving some people a pass.

There's a hierarchy to all this shit. Watch a vid where a black guy makes racists comments to an asian and read the comments. It'll all be about how funny it is.
Watch a vid where an asian guy calls a black guy the dreaded word that can't be said and it'll be like he has kicked off a 2nd holocaust.

I gave up years ago. It was quite clear that there was an agenda behind it and it's not being used to clear up actual racism. People need to just get on with their fucking lives and treat people how they would like to be treated.

Good movie by the way. But the acting did suck.
 
the other thing, besides the acting, that people bitched about on a racial point was that it was once again a white man as a savior but when it's Clint, an icon, it's forgivable for me. The point is true though, even in the controversy of django, the white man was the savior, great movie still but that theme is rote for hollywood.

And Rocky 3 is a black savior. Is Pai Mei an Asian savior in Kill Bill or wait, is this bad because a white woman is learning the martial arts and appropriating culture, or wait is it all good because it's a female protagonist, hang on I'm getting a headache...

Okay so The Karate Kid is okay because it has an Asian savior but wait is Daniel appropriating Japanese culture? Dammit. Okay The Next Karate Kid should be okay, it's an Asian savior and a woman appropriating the culture so that should be okay? The bad guys are white aren't they? Should be all right. Wait a minute Lamar from Revenge of the Nerds was one of the Cobra Kais in the first movie, is that okay? Was there even anybody in the karate tournament that was gay or trans? Why is the Karate Kid suggesting that only cis hetero people do karate?

Wait a minute sure Rocky 3 has Apollo and Tony as double black saviors but Clubber Lang is a black guy and he's the bad guy. I can't tell what Rocky 3 is supposed to be telling me about race and what I should think about it. Wait a minute, Adrian gives him a pep talk on the beach that one time. Is she a female savior? Maybe I can still watch Rocky 3. But Apollo wasn't able to get Rocky to train hard on the beach until Adrian give him the talk. So is the movie telling me to listen to white women and not black men? Ugggghh, I think this movie needs a five minute contextualization message from a university professor to let me know how I should interpret these scenes and how the intersectionality works with the different Rocky pep talks. Mickey's didn't work, Apollo's first one worked, but his second one didn't, but Adrian's did. Wait, Mickey was Jewish. Is Rocky 3 anti-Semitic if Mickey wasn't able to train Rocky to win the first Clubber Lang fight?
