Gord Downie diagnosed with terminal cancer

Never liked the Hip, but they made their mark. Icons in Canada. Shame.

Always found it funny how you would have to sell your first born to get tickets to see them in Canada, but across the border you could see them play at some dive bar in front of 50 people.

Fug, this hits harder than any other celeb/musician dying for me.. The Hip are probably my favourite band and I've never even seen them live. I'm going to have to try and see them once before it isn't possible anymore.. fuck sake it's like someone in my immediate family just died.

They're not widely popular outside of Canada but they have a huge following in the country. Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer this past December. The band broke the news this morning, and they've announced one last tour this summer. It is going to be insane and a must see for any fan of the hip.

Official announcement from their website..

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE BAND

Hello friends.

We have some very tough news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn’t so.

A few months ago, in December, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Since then, obviously, he’s endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard. In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we’ve been standing by him.

So after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hundreds of tours…

We’ve decided to do another one.

This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us.

What we in The Hip receive, each time we play together, is a connection; with each other; with music and it’s magic; and during the shows, a special connection with all of you, our incredible fans.

So, we’re going to dig deep, and try to make this our best tour yet.

We hope you can come out and join us this summer – details and dates will be coming this week.

And we sincerely thank all of you, for your continued love and support,

Paul, GordD, Johnny, Rob, GordS

Not dead yet, could be years, could be months

Also lets not forget Gord the actor

They're still gonna tour for one last time too. An actual farewell tour... bring some kleenex. Damn.

thats sad to hear, I hope Gord enjoys whatever time he has left, they made a lot of great music over the years

I read this news earlier today and it really does suck. The Hip used to be my favourite band back in the early to mid 90's. Like they were to a lot of Canadians back then. They lost me with their work after that, but their music over their first few albums was some tremendous stuff that I still go back and listen to every so often. Gord's energetic self has been one hell of a front man up on the stage and off stage he is the complete opposite. Just a cool, thoughtful, down to earth type of guy. I had a friend who met and chatted with him for a few minutes while Gord was sitting on a beach under a umbrella in Gimli, MB (one SummerFest in the late 80's before The Hip made it big in Canada), and he talked about how cool Gord was to him. This be some really shitty news.

I can't even imagine how emotional their final concert will be. Final concert has to be in either Toronto or Kingston

I was blasting the hip this weekend as I always do for May 24. Only to wake up this morning and hear the news. They've been a huge part of my life in the background playing as I had some of the best times of my life.

Tour dates announced. Going to be a very emotional show in Kingston.

July 22: Victoria

July 24: Vancouver

July 28: Edmonton

August 1: Calgary

August 5: Winnipeg

August 8: London

August 10, 12: Toronto

August 16: Hamilton

August 18: Ottawa

August 20: Kingston

Anyone been to one of the shows yet? I am going to Calgary tonight and Wednesday
