In the wake of Trump securing the nomination, many of the conservative intellectuals are losing their shit. Some have called this the death of American Conservatism in favor of a more European, identity politics based Conservatism. Others say that Trump represents no conservative ideology whatsoever and is just a whore who found a desperate john in the GOP.

So what does the GOP stand for at this point? Is it still the part of limited government and states' rights? Is it still the party of American Exceptionalism and reverence for the Constitution? Is it still the party of Christianity? If not, what, if anything, is the GOP about now?

Reality TV party.

Really, the base no longer trusts the establishment. I think the base is still socially conservative, for small government, largely religious, etc. That's not true of the establishment.

I've been saying that for a while. It's not just Trump, though it's more obvious with Trump. The GOP has been using white nationalist resentment to get voter support for a very unpopular economic agenda. The base has gone along with "conservatism" because it's been their only option, but no one still believes that tax cuts for the rich are going to benefit anyone but the rich people who pay less taxes and no one really thinks that spending is a big problem.

The GOP sold out the American people a long time ago...

I don't know why all of the conservative "think tanks" and intellectuals are losing their shit now. They should have been going fucking berserk during the GWB presidency. But rather, they defended him and his actions.

and we can also thank the evangelical fuck sticks for killing the GOP. you guys repelled much of the moderates and independent voters from siding with your party.

dip$hits....

This is nothing new.
RINOs have been a thing for a while now.

I can remember back when the GOP started doing the "family values" schtick and hopping into bed with the religious right for votes, and knew it wouldn't end well.

This is the direct result.

Fully around and now the circle is almost complete.

This is immediately what I thought of. Candidates have to go full ripskater/TCK to win the primaries which makes them pretty much unelectable during the general. Way to go.

Yup...this is what you get when you hop in the sack with backward fucking morons who are completely disengaged from reality. (young earthers, creationists etc, Bible literalists)

i think the gop base still believes in small government and states rights. the religious sect of the party is ridiculous and does turn off a lot of voters. not a huge trump guy but think he will be good for the party and wake up all the establishment types that thought the voters dont matter. trump types and cruz types are going to be the future of the party. i also think trump wins the general in a landslide. all the pundits have been wrong about trump since the start.

I think the party really began running on fear and never an optimistic message for sometime now. The result has been being conservative=not trusting anything, even the party itself. This has lead to a larger hate for their own party which ultimately played to trump. You can see the voters cared far more about presentation this year than a platform. They wanted a "tough guy" and as long as that person countered anything with an insult, they saw it as strength. The party is a hole in the ground now. I honestly think it stays that way for a decade because the older base of retirees are stuck on Fox News and the party still panders/needs them. It really did seem like a new coalition was being build when you saw Haley and Scott back Rubio in South Carolina over Jeb. They was potential there. frankly, there was more potential anywhere more than with trump.

How can the party's future be both trump and Cruz types?

I find it hard to understand how the future is both Tea Party and anti-tea party. Trump is the least "small government, states' rights" candidate the GOP has run since Nixon. If anything, this election has taught us that GOP voters like the anger of the Tea Party, but don't really care about what it stands for.

if Cruz types are the future of the GOP then they are as good as dead...

the last thing the GOP needs is establishment, car salesmen assholes without souls, who pander to special interests and to top it off, being a creationist fucktard.

i agree, definatly wouldnt call trump a true conservative. i think general anger towards the political class dominated most voters choice this year rather than idealoogy

Not one to usually focus on typos, but I would disagree here because I think Trump definitely has idea-loogies that he spits out constantly.

Then what does that say for the base when they nominate a twice divorced, socially liberal guy that wants to amend the 1st amendment and knows an eye for and eye is in the Bible?

Are talking about the independents and moderates that voted in Romney and now Trump? Pffft

I don't get this. You had McCain, Romney, and now Trump and not 1 of them is a hardcore social conservative
