What are some good DVDs or online resources for working on mat returns and riding (in the folk wrestling sense)? It's become increasingly clear this is something I need to get better at for MMA, and it's pretty much absent as a topic in BJJ circles.

Anything in particular you are looking for, types of rides etc

Not really, mostly looking for good material on how to break someone down from referee's position and keep them down, as well as the mat returns. I'm fine if I get to play the BJJ style top game so anything where someone's back is already turned isn't of much use (and I don't need anything on pinning combinations), just looking to keep people down who are good at getting to their knees to stand up.

Alright give me a little bit

This series covers a lot of essential concepts, not perfect but it’s a start

I’m going to have to dig to find the ones I think will help a lot.

Several key principals but not comprehensive keys to riding
1. Put opponents Weight on hands
2. Constant forward pressure to put weight on hands
3. Control his hips
4. Take away his base
5. Win the hand fight, whoever wins that almost always wins the mat wrestling

Are mat returns basically takedowns from a standing back take?
Anything else on the feet would just be referred to a takedown right?

mhm its the main thing grapplers should work on everyone assumes they are gonna get here one takedown and be able to hold them in side control the whole fight isnt that simple today when everyone has decent takedown defense there are a bunch of analyst vids of askren khabib but it isnt really instructional s

Basically yes, the verbiage comes from the fact that you are “returning” them to the ground that they are trying to desperately flee like the cur.. oops I mean they are trying to get back to their feet to try and gain an advantageous position themselves

This is an honest coach opinion, as in how I’d evaluate one of my athletes, you have been given plenty of answers, you just are always looking for the magical technique or trick. Wrestling is super complex and simple at the same time.

Yeah pretty much denying your opponent the escape.

That's very helpful, thanks.

i see so many even good usa wrestlers have issues when they take a guy down and the guy goes to stand back up they dont even seem to try to keep them down they just hold on and and hold his hips as the guy stands when i sue to train at att in orlando one bellator fighter who was a ncaa d1 wrestler and brown belt was trying to say all mma wrestling is is a double leg and a single and thats it everything else you learn on the mat is useless i found that to be shocking obviously everyone has there own opinions and he has the credentials to make statements but the rest of us were like wtf

i just try to eb as technical as possible even in jiu jitsu and boxing i always feel theres always gonna be someone stronger and better conditioned so i want to have my technique on point

Not every USA wrestler is good at riding. And clearly you can use more in wrestling than what that guy said. The key in mma is.. the wrestlers who have consciously adjusted and applied “riding” to wrestling usually succeed in riding or using the riding to create mental and physical pressure even if the bottom guy escapes

And simply saying someone will always be in better shape or stronger is a closed mindset.. stop it. Growth mindset in everything not just “technique”

And my coaching point stays the same.. in fact you reinforced it. You use “questions” as a way to find the easy way out. Being good on top is attitude before technique.. you are going to ride that mother fucker and control him, and him escaping or not grunting or squealing in discomfort should be annoying

The best guys on top are always, no not mostly, always, first and foremost “mean”, technique varies but that attitude and flat out being mean and wanting to physically dominate and control someone comes much further ahead of “well Guyth, does the fulcrum being here instead of here and there matter?” If you actually want to get good at Matt wrestling understand that

That's very helpful, thanks.
No problem, I still haven’t had the time to dig in and find the ones that’ll cross over best. But I’ll try to tomorrow

On a completely random note to anyone reading this, does anyone know of any respectable English mastiff breeders east of the Mississippi? They do not have to have puppies immediately available. I don’t want to risk preventable health problems because I bought from a shady breeder

@jack36767

Most of the mat return instructionals I see involve dumping the guy on all 4's. Why don't they ever go the other way to land the guy on his back (besides a belly to back suplex)? Is this something that the wrestling rule set incentivizes?

Because pulling the guy on top of you shouldn’t be a go to unless you are specialists at crab riding

Kolat.com has some stuff on mat returns.
I haven't really gone through his content, but you can get a good idea of how he teaches from his youtube videos.

I think he has two series on mat returns and one series on riding drills.
He's also got stuff on half nelsons/gut wrenches/leg laces if you're interested in that.

There are two guest series (Joe Dubuque and CD Mock) that cover rides as well.

There are also a ~12 camps on his website as well, which have variable content (most of the time they have a theme).

I bought his membership on impulse but it's (or was) pretty cheap—$100 for lifetime.
