This is one plot hole among many plot holes in The Force Awakens.
A part of me wonders if JJ Abrams only read the screenplay of Return of the Jedi instead of watching it.

So anyways, this is plot hole #76: The Mystery of Darth Vader's Helmet

How the fuck did Kylo obtain Vader's helmet?
I'm guessing JJ Abrams wanted people to assume Luke Skywalker wanted to keep evil memories of his father stashed away in his cave for 20-25 years.
But that wouldn't make any sense since Anakin Skywalker force projected himself next to Obi-Wan Kenobi at the end of ROTJ.
Was seeing Anakin's real face not good enough for Luke?

Another assumption is that Luke gave Kylo Ren vader's mask as a gift for his 18th birthday as a sign of adulthood.
Like: "Hey Nephew, wanna see evil? Surprise!!!! This could be you"

Maybe Kylo was a teenage delinquent and stole Vader's helmet from the Batcave.
Again, this is only an assumption.

Kylo wasn't even born when Vader was still strutting around in his metal tuxedo.
He doesn't even know how Anakin became Vader, let alone witness how he speaks.

What I gathered from plot hole #76 was Kylo Ren listened to really awful stories told by his parents as a kid.
Gee........Thanks Han

True fact: no one knows what a plot hole is anymore.

Who cares?

The helmet has no reason or purpose anyways
Honestly, you can apply your statement to these first two NewStarwars movies.

They server no purpose - well maybe to show how women are just as badass as men with little to not training.

Never seen them

So I'll take your word for it

I just wan Galen Marek to come in at the last moment and kill Ben Solo

You know, it's often the case that confusing or disappointing shit in the films is later explained and/or clarified in a subsequent novelization -- and it's a fucking great story. My question is: Is the prose story great because the movie aspect was disappointing, or was it great in and of itself?

True fact: no one knows what a plot hole is anymore.

I have yet to see one, myself. I've been looking. The closest I've gotten is why Jacob Kowalski is still in FANTASTIC BEASTS:

JK Simmons comes up with convenient dialogue to explain why, but dramaturgically he should have exited the film pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong, I like him in the film and he should stay, but they set up scenarios that logically and tonally collided.

The helmet was on fire at the Ewok village.

In the novels it is mentioned that the Knights of Ren were going around collecting artifacts of Vader. It's unlikely that Luke kept the burned and broken helmet; it's not unthinkable that someone at the party kept it and sold it to some collector that was later visited by the Knights of Ren.

That's not a plot hole, that's just nitpicking.

If you want a plot hole look at TLJ and the ship kamikaze. If ships can jump that short outside of hyperspace lanes, why didn't the Rebels just jump a Cruiser class vessel into the Death Stars reactor?

I just want to see Rey actually lose to someone who is obviously more skilled than her.

But that not gonna . . .

Dude, she sucks. I used to stick up for her because I figured she'd have some super cool reveal and it's a move of space wizards with laser swords, so who's to really say which wizard is more buff right?

TLJ just confirmed her as a BS Mary Sue though, and even the novels, which generally shore up the holes, could barely make it work. Pretty much they said that when she does her psychometry that she's able to gain insight into force abilities - so when she was linked with Kylo, she like X-Men Rogue'd all his abilities... is that not completely retarded?

Rian Johnson can go eat a penis. They should have just made her Obi Wan's daughter like we all wanted. Sure it was a bit expected, but it would of been better than the current cannon. Even if she really is, and we find out later, them having to reason her crazy power at this point has pretty much wrecked her as a character.

When yoda said

“No there is another” he was obviously talking about the real most powerful Jedi to have ever existed, Galen Marek.

He’s out there somewhere banging away on the pilot chick, not concerned about what’s happening elsewhere at the time.

That’s about all they could do to save it at this point is have Galen or maybe even Kyle and jaden show up to save the day.

Come on JJ, we’ve lost luke. It’s time to get starkiller off the bench.

That's like asking how come all traffic stops don't end like this:

The entirety of ep 8 is a plot hole, wrapped round a pile of deus ex machinas. On top of that stupid fucking casino planet.

Read the title as "Gaping hole".

Left disappointed.

No
There's a scene in the film where Kylo is caressing Vader's damaged helmet.
He even speaks to it.
He was buried/burnt with it, right? Kylo probably stole it

I think a better question is how a simple fire was able to melt Vader's Suit

Its not like that Suit was made out of plastic

He constantly used the force as a force shield with the suit. No body, no force, easy to burn.

Another thing about Vader's helmet is how it comes in two pieces.
It was dumbed down in the Force Awakens to look like a halloween mask. That's not how it was designed.
The face plate attaches to his suit and the helmet goes on top.
It is not one piece.

Another oversight by JJ
