Gilbert Burns is calling out Nate Diaz instead of a title shot

There are two ways to get title shots: either "earn" it or increase your profile to create demand. Burns likely understands that he'd have a long road to "earning" a title shot given the fact he got wiped out by Usman. So he's trying to get fights that will increase his public profile. He was just the co-main of the biggest card of the year against a fighter with name value; now he's calling out guys like Nate and Masvidal to increase his profile more.

Side note: who doesn't want easy paydays?
 
Chiesa -vs- Luque coming up in a few weeks.

Burns should fight the winner.

Not only is this true, but people weirdly blame the fighters instead of their bosses.

The UFC chooses to run the company like the circus coming to town instead of a sport. The only thing Burns (and any fighter) should be doing is trying to make the most money with the least brain damage. The UFC will throw them in the garbage the minute they are done with them.

Posters who talk about this stuff like its Samurai honor are not mature adults or just trolling. These are guys with families who have actively hostile bosses trying to squeeze every ounce of value out of them for as little pay they can get away with.

I would rather see him fight Colby but can't blame him either. Most of the welterweights in the top 15 are no name fighters.

Well, he knows he isnt getting a title shot next, better to call for the easier fight that could give him name and money, considering the guy who is fighting for the title next in Edwards didnt put Nate away, he might be counting on him getting the job done and then a title fight.
 
Eh, it's probably smarter to take few fights and try to change something before next shot.

Those immediate, or almost immediate, rematches pretty much end up the same as first fight in like 80% of cases at least.
 
The thing I love about Nate is that he doesn't give a fuck what 'the plan' is - he comes to fight every time. The way he derailed Conor's plans back in the day, the way he nearly finished Leon.. Everyone seems to think that he is easy pickings but now and then, a favourite realises that his chin and pressure are a nightmare if you are gassed and have nowhere to go. It would be hilarious to see him weather the Burns storm early and then TKO him in the championship rounds.
 
Is it weird that all of these guys want a fight with Nate, but none are a big enough name (with the exception of Masvidal) ?

Burns and everyone in his camp and management team have always wanted the big money low risk fights. They are a new version of those risk averse boring fighters from Jackson’s a decade or two ago.
 
Why do guys call for huge fights like this when they have no leverage? Nate generates interests and money but only for himself. The number go up and Diaz gets bigger payday. Burns has no following and no PPV points access, so why call for a fight tjats not even gonna really get you paid? Even if you get the fight you waste the payday not having PPV. Nates not gonna fight on a fight night card
 
Can’t blame him. He’s at the top of a jammed division and literally just fought the champ. Make that $$ Giblert.
 
Burns should fight Colby
Give Leon a break and let him fight Usman
Diaz should hang loose and see if he needs to get revenge for Nick if he loses to Lawler
 
Burns just called out Leon Edwards for a fight in the next few months.

Burns is the most game fighter at WW. He calls out top guys constantly and will fight anyone. He takes guys that other fighters don’t want to fight because their style makes for a tough win, like wonderboy.


He’s the exact opposite of Covington.
