Are there any restrictions of gi colors in competitions or does it depend on the particular rules of the competition?

    for example:

I used to fight in normal white and blue gis so I have never had a critical look at it

Depends on the competition. Tournaments like NAGA are really laid back allowing any color or even mixed jacket and pant colors if you choose. IBJJF tournaments are more strict only allowing white, blue and black gis without any color mixes between the top and bottom.

I've heard this too but its better to be safe than sorry. Go for a white, blue or black if you can.

White, Blue and Black. Different shades of each are allowed.

Mixing pants and jacket isn't, nor are contrasting collars.

There have been people wearing Navy Blue gis in the Worlds, Pan Ams and every other major BJJ tournament. How much safer could you have been? :)
