Genuinely scary horror movies

So the original Pet Semetary is good? The 2019 was such a piece of shit it. Only movie I've ever walked out on.

How has Antichrist (Lars Von Trier) not been listed yet?

That's not really scary is it? More like weird and cryptic (one scene I had to close my eyes though as disgusting as it was).

For me:
  • Shining
  • Deep red
  • Suspiria
  • Inferno
  • Misery

Not generally a big fan of Von Tier but I'v seen a few recommendations of that.

I do think that most of the best horror of the past couple of decades has been more on the arthouse side though. The problem IMHO is that at some point in the early 00's the genre increasingly shifted towards catering for lowest common denominator "horror fans" who were happy with the same teen slasher/jump scare stuff being recycled endlessly.

Used to be people like Friedkin, Kubrick, Polanski, Scott, Cronenberg, Alan Parker plus of course Carpenter were making mainstream horror films, directors with real skill at the peak of their careers were as these days that rarely happens. Its a genre full of somewhat competent but ultimately bland directors working to order, hence why so many modern remakes turn out to be sub standard compared to stuff like The Fly, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, etc

Arthouse horror like Under the Skin, Berberian Sound Studio, Killing of a Sacred Deer, etc is much more following in the footsteps of a lot of 70's and 80's classics for me.

I really, REALLY, dislike slasher genre and jump scares. I'm not familiar with the term arthouse horror though, despite being a horror fan.

Killing of a Sacred Deer is pretty similar to The House That Jack Built imo. Having prior knowledge of what the directors tries to infer will make the movie experience better. As compared to someone that doesn't, they probably won't understand what the film is trying to say.

I'll try to see if I can find Berberian Sound Studio to give it a go.

I don't mind the odd well made slasher film but its overtaken the entire genre, the same way 90% of mainstream comedy became slapstick bro affairs around the late 90's. Hollywood has ghettoised such subgenres and just carries on sellng the same hackeyed product year after year knowing a certain audience will lap it up.

I really just mean cinema aimed at the arthouse audience that has a strong horror aspect to it. I mean I think something like The Shining fits right in with it style wise(and is obviously a big influence on someone like Lathimos) but at that point Hollywood was actually selling it to a mainstream audience.

A bunch of solid flicks have been name already...

The most recent horror movie I really enjoyed was the "The Autopsy of Jane Doe".

Wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to this movie.
Watched the autopsy of Jane doe last night, I liked it :)

Part of the reason I think Raiders works better than the other Indy movies is the sense of creeping dread around the Ark and the opening scene is still one of the best horror scenes IMHO...

Some of my favorites, starting at the one that bothers me the most and going down from there:

A Serbian Film

Megan Is Missing

The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Inside

Raw

Im currently watching Hereditary since it's been mentioned here a few times and even a coworker mentioned it.

Will report back.

Watched hereditary last night. I'm not some crazy thorough reviewer or anything but here are my thoughts...no spoilers and very vague description incoming.

Right off the bat I'll say this. Great movie but not all that scary and truth be told it wasn't for me. The acting was amazing, the female leads performance (whose name I cannot remember) was probably her best yet and the director did a fantastic job of making it what people call an "atmospheric" horror film. The selection of the cast worked very well for the movie. All the actors in the family had a look of dread in their faces through out the entire movie and that little girl was horrifying to look at. I feel bad for saying it but her ugliness (which is probably a birth defect shame on me) seriously added to the overall creepy vibe to the movie.

That being said with all the necessary praises out of the way let's look at what sucked about it.

1) A slow burn would be an understatement. This movies pacing is attrocious and it works waaaaaaaaaaay too hard to be an "atmospheric" horror film. Shit doesn't really hit the fan until near the ending and then your sort of saying "wtf" as it goes from 0-retarded in no time.....which Segways into the next point

2) The ending (no spoilers). For those of you that have seen it......wtf? I'll just say that they could have done waaaaaaaaaaay better with this part and honestly if your going to like or hate the movie it's going to really come down to how you feel about the ending. The movie is rather uneventful as it just builds an eerie atmosphere so if you don't end up liking the final culmination of it all there is something left to be desired.....that's exactly what happened with me here.

3) It needs to be said but.... honestly people need to relax with the horror movie snobbery and thinking "atmospheric" horror to be well done while jump scares are cheap. This isn't a criticism of the film as much as it is a criticism for the entire idea of atmospheric horror and lack of jump scares. I'm sorry guys but they tend to just not be scary. Even the babadook (which imo was better) wasn't all that scary. This tireless pursuit of a creepy factor that either fizzles out or in this case explodes near the ending isn't a good one and doesn't make for good horror.

Conclusion/TLDR:
-It's not scary
-atmospheric horror = overrated/trend of our generation, that being said it's still a fantastic movie and if you are scared of atmospheric horror for what ever reason this will do the trick
-The movie was legit an amazing MOVIE just not all that scary to me which is subjective.
-acting was top notch
Ending isn't for everyone but if you do like it (which I don't) you will love it.
-pacing is horrible.
-Babadook did it better
