Genuinely scary horror movies

Being brought up as a Catholic, the Exorcist unsettled me more than any other.
It is one of the classics of horror. I've been more entertained by some of the other classics, but this was the scariest.
Since the start of the new millennium, The Grudge is the scariest I've seen by a mile.

The original Pet Semetary was too much. No jumpscares (real good horrors dont need them) but just straight fucking eerie and nightmarish, Zelda traumatised everyone.

Ju-On 0-2 are absolutely stellar. They're sort of difficult with the time jumps and all, but they're the pinnacle of horror movies I've seen.

The American version of the Ring was also good.

The Thing is a great movie, but it's more scifi than horror.

I have watched a ton of disturbing films in my time and one of the only ones that had me shook was sinister for what ever reason. Horror movies are personal like that. What gets some people scared makes others laugh. Sinister just had the right ingredients for me.

After some recommendations for good horror/thriller movies. Anything that genuinely frightened you

Here's a few I liked.

Hereditary - Some really chilling scenes towards the end, and an actually decent movie with good writing and twists

It Follows - Scary atmosphere throughout the movie, doesn't rely on jumpscares so much as building up dread. Liked the concept also

Get Out - Not so much scary, but definitely creepy and suspenseful. Really good movie

The Strangers - Another rare horror movie that didnt use jumpscares and instead slowly built up tension as the movie went on

LOVED It Follows

Also the original 'The Eye' (esp the elevator scene)

Personally I am huge huge fan of all the found footage horror stuff. I've seen all the greats:

Blair Witch Project
First Paranormal Activity
V/H/S
Noroi: The Curse
REC
The Borderlands
Grave Encounters

Will gladly take suggestions on ones I may have missed out on though if anybody has any.

The Witch creeped me out from Beginning to end.

The Exorcist 3

Whats the third Exorcist about? The second one was trash.

It never got a fair shake because of the terrible part 2.
Part 3 is based solely on the original.Part Serial Killer Film/part Horror.
Part 3 was directed by William Peter Blatty, who wrote the original Book.

Disappointed to not see Event Horizon on the first page. I was about 13 when I saw it in the theaters and I was dropped off at night at the end of my street by my friend's cousin. It was a scary walk back to the house.

Those home movies in Sinister really got me. Some fucked up stuff.

Hereditary was one of the most unsettling/disturbing I’ve seen in the past decade. Easily.

Not sure it warrants consideration with some of these, but got damn does it have the GOAT jump scare!

"Hills have eyes" was creepy
The Exorcist/The shining are pretty scary/creepy in a "never wanna see that again" kind of way.

In addition to The Exorcist/The Shining I recommend any of the following:

The Omen
Suspiria
Rosemary's Baby
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Halloween

Alien - absolute classic
28 Days Later - 1st time I saw zombies running and the thought of that is scary af
Dog Soldiers - I actually don't remember a thing about this movie except rather liking it so I'm just gonna leave this here for you guys to find out.
Some of those Japanese and Thai movies.

I'm genuinely baffled by Get Out. It's a good movie, but definitely more of a thriller than a horror.
And Insidious is truly one of the crappiest "horror" movies I've ever seen. I don't understand how it gets such good reviews.

Hereditary. But Chernobyl is probably the scariest, just not your traditional horror.

Movies that creeped me out afterwards and made me sleep with a TV on

Sinister (think it was the creepy music in the home movies that got me more than anything)
Paranormal Activity 3? (the scene in the kitchen shook me for days)
The Conjuring
Dark Skies
The Grudge (the weird music, the kid, and the weird dead walk nope)

Ironically as a little kid no scary movie ever scared me except Pet Sematary and that was only because we had a cat who looked exactly like Church. Seems the older I get the more of a little whimp I have become watching scary movies.
