Generation Kill - Underrated?

Old thread alert!! I think this has to be on my list of shows to watch now. It's free on Prime and I've NEVER seen this show! I thought BoB and The Pacific were both amazing.

Things to keep in mind:
- Encino Man is STILL in the Marines and works in Naval intelligence
- Fick, Iceman and others said they took the officer bashing a bit further than it actually was
- Case Caseum (the sgt under Encino Man) later became a platoon commander and was actually very good at it

I know Rudy Reyes is underrated.

One of the things I like that they did was try and take an un-biased view of the situation like, ‘let’s drop the audience in the middle of this, unfiltered, and let them make up their own minds..’

Yup, David Simon was the key guy for Generation Kill.

The biggest way to see it? His utter lack of a musical soundtrack where the songs in the series come from the characters or in-world sources:

Rudy was played by the actual 1st Recon Marine. Interesting factoid.

Great mini series and probably the most realistic out of all of the Iraq War movies/shows I've ever watched. Great representation of the Marine Corps. Officer bashing was a little extreme though. I have to imagine that the real officers in 1st Recon probably weren't as bad as they acted in the show.

Rudy wasn't the only one. Remember the dude that gets sent to work on the trucks when they make it to Baghdad cause some reservists reported him for mis-treating a prisoner? He played himself. AND, that dude lost I think one leg on a deployment after the one in the show and deployed a third time after that.

The distrust and shit talking about their chain of command was on point and the overall confusion and unbelievable amount of stupidity is very realistic as well.

It's honestly quite a bit overrated to me. Maybe I have to let it sink in a bit but the idea was awesome. However I felt I watched the same episode like 6 times over. Nothing changed and nothing really happened.

1. The team wanted action and didn't get much.
2. Leadership was awful and Captain America was crazy/scared
3. Godfather just wanted to get glory at any cost
4. The marines never appeared to be in any real danger and they killed a lot of "Hajiis"

That about sums it up. Now I know there was so much under it about how this was supposed to be about how real military was and how the war really played out. I get that part. But I got the point after 2 episodes then I feel like they just did a rinse and repeat honestly. It was good but nowhere near BoB for example.

Even guys like Brad, Fick, Encino Man, Gunny, Trombly, etc. all just did the same stuff every episode. Nothing realy progressed.

I really hate when we pull out of "opinion dicks" to label what is better than the other. Band of Brothers and Generation Kill are both amazing mini-series, and are probably the best of the best in their respective genres, but I can't say with a straight face one is definitely better than the other.

i can. Band of Brothers, while it tackled a much better war, was a pretty uneven series, had a lot of shlocky moments, and Marky Mark’s brother.

Just finished watching this and thought it was a masterpiece. Imo on the level of HBO's big war epics. Anyone else seen this?

Massively underrated. One of the greatest miniseries of all time.

I stand by my 2019 post. It's fine to watch, but nothing ever really happens especially when compared to Band of Brothers for example.

I don't think so at all... Not a god damn thing happened in that Mini Series...

That's kind of the point I think. They're elite recon marines being used to drive humvees across a desert. It's about the misallocation of resources and the incompetence of their command.
