Gaming the rules - hand on the ground

If he puts his hand on the ground, he naturally shifts his weight forward.
As a result of this, a knee he eats during this weight shift is more damaging than a regular knee. It's about the physics, I think.

Same as moving into a punch and moving away from it.

This is most likely true, but fighters do take advantage of this rule which makes us the fans want them to get rid of it.

And apart from the dumb rule, there seems to be different interpretation from different refs.

I swear I remember Big John telling fighters in a locker room that he wouldn't let them game the rules by putting their hand down.

Hand on the ground, hand on the ground, taking advantage of the rules with your hand on the ground!

..This is MMA, not a sparring competition. Legalize everything except groin shots, biting, eye pokes, and headbutts.

Wow.

The rule needs to be changed immediately.

As it stands, from this position, it's almost as if the guy on the bottom has the advantage.

This really needs to change.

I am fine with the "downed" points being the knee, ass/torso, and elbows (which would pretty much guarantee you are on a knee anyway), but fingertips is garbage. I really liked Big John telling DJ when he could and could not throw knees.

Here's why it doesn't really matter:
If you are trying to put your hand down right as a person throws a knee then you haven't established yourself as grounded so knees and kicks to the head wouldn't be deemed illegal.
If you place your hand down and keep it down, then you have put yourself into a more vulnerable position. Your are leaning over and you take 1 of you hands out of the equation. This leaves you open to punches and leaves you open to getting your back taken, taken down, or getting submitted. Fighters are going to get used to the guys trying to play the game and take advantage of it.

Exactly. Complaining because a fighter can't throw a knee is asinine when there are other options available to hm.

When is being stooped over with your ribs and back fully exposed an advantage? You people can't see the forest through the trees.

The rule needs to be changed. The whole thing with Dodson and DJ was just one example of many where they are exploiting the rules. Dodson wasn't any more forward when he put his hand down, he just wanted to stop the knees to the head and hopefully penalize DJ.
