As an Elite Pro I haven't gone to a Gamestop in a year and went to one the last 2 days. It is tanking. I was starring at the games they wanted $59.99 for and thinking, I can play Gears 5, The Outer Worlds, all Gears games, all Halo games, Minecraft, every Borderlands game (minus 3), etc......For $1 for 3 months with game pass online.

BTW i bought the Elite Pro sub in 2018 and they cancelled the Elite Pro sub 2 months later because "too many people were buying it."

I might sound biased but i was a loyal Hollywood video member and Blockbuster member for a decade. Times are a changin'

weird, i had no idea that people were downloading games

There's no point to GameStop. They don't offer any good deals and their trade-in values have always been garbage. May as well sell your games on eBay. The only reason to go there is if you want a physical copy of a new game on day 1 and even then you can probably get it at Target or Walmart.

They deserve to go out of business for the way they've ripped off gamers for years. Karma.

Gamestop like Blockbuster can suck a dick. Glad they are going under. Terrible deals, shitty trade-in programs, overpriced used titles which hurt indie devs, and they take new games out of the case and put them in sleeves for some titles.

As a gaming vet if you are on xbox get game pass for $1 for1-3 months, cancel before it is renewed then get another deal in less than a week.

i just cancelled my game pass yesterday and got 3 months of pass and gold for $1.

I know this hurts game companies in the pocket book but just make an amazing game and we will pay. Last game i bought was Xcom WOTC Collection with all DLC.

Gears 5 is pretty damn legit.

It's inevitable, regardless of their service. They'd be wise to throw their bounty at a digital service across all platforms, instead of trying to hang onto their current business model. Videogame stores are going the way of Video Rental outlets. There will soon be nothing for them to sell, and all those collectables and swag will only keep them afloat for so long.

This.

They already look outdated. There really isnt much they can do to compete with the instant gratification and comfort of simply downloading video games in seconds. Hell you can even take 3 minutes to look at reviews and trailers at home before making your decision. That being said,I hope they DONT die.

There is a bit of an argument for physical copies. Which is, there are still a hefty amount of gamers out there with garbage internet, who won't be able to keep up with the sea change. The size of updates today alone, are a bane on those folks. The industry has to figure out if they're ready to abandon that part of the market, or not. The internet providers also have to take that into consideration, and maybe start tweaking their approach to accommodate the future, where everything relies on digital downloads/streaming.

We're at a culture shift, and these companies gotta figure it out and try to accommodate everyone. Taking the "have nots" for granted, could hurt them too. North America specifically, as we're way behind in internet accessibility in terms of what is actually needed for all of these services. They have to seriously think of eliminating data caps, at the least.

Last time I went in one of those stores it was cluttered with shitty used mobile phones and cheap tablets. The place looked like a broke ass pawn shop.

Went into a GameStop on Black Friday. Was the saddest thing ever, all those gaming PCs with no one using them.

I'm always amazed every time I'm reminded this company is still in business.

As relevant as Blockbuster.

^^^
this and this.

I saw the September headline that they were closing 200 business globally, but I don't see any news that they're going out of business. If that is intended as your prediction I wholeheartedly agree. Hell, if you visit the Game Sales thread, you'll know that just this past week Redbox decided to get out of the VG business, and liquidate all of their discs. They had some killer deals including $25 for the recent Star Wars: Fallen Order game on PS4 & XB1. Part of me wonders if sales like the below from today are a sign of Gamestop doing the same in an effort to clear out inventory.
Xbox One X NBA 2K19 Bundle is on sale via Gamespot for $250 today-- the price of a normal Xbox One unit. To make it even sweet you get an additional free Xbox One wireless controller with the purchase. This isn't available online, so your only hope is if a local Gamestop has it stocked. Mine has it in stock:
  • Xbox One X 1TB
  • 2x Xbox One wireless controllers
  • NBA 2K19

The Xbox One X is still going for $350 at Best Buy (in game bundles: Star Wars: Fallen Order; NBA 2K20; Gears of War 5), and $340 (no bundle) at Amazon. This is last year's NBA 2K, but considering the extra controller, and the fact a game you can sell is better than none at all, this is a very attractive deal.

Shortly after the new consoles are released next year im expecting them to declare bankruptcy. This past year they also tried to expand into adult oriented gaming lan facilities that double as esports viewing venues.

I went to Gamestop yesterday to go shopping for a Christmas present and really 2/3 of the store is like a Hot Topic or ThinkGeek type "nerd/anime culture" merchandise store. I don't mind going there to buy games every now and then if they have a better deal than Target or Amazon but they seem to be short-timers in that field.

Most stores dont seem to carry the selection they once did. The prices on their own seem fair enough, but the deals they used to have arent really there anymore.

But where are lonely dudes going to hang out and flirt/worship the one girl who works there?

I still like and go to GameStop sometimes . I literally paid two bucks for Xbox game pass ultimate and they extended it to the end of my gold membership... so I have until feb 2021 of ultimate gamepass on Xbox and pc. For 2 bucks... so no reason to buy Xbox games from them. I still go for switch games but I pretty much play mariokart and Mario maker 2. Hardly ever get a new switch game . Pc I just buy online and PS4 I have been buying games on amazon .

They sell more clothes and toys now then games I think . The used game market is closing up as ps plus, pc usually give out decent games free if u wait a few months .. epic store hands out like 2 free games a month sometimes more . I have every Batman/ Arkham and LEGO, game free from them

I resisted going digital for a while but once you do, it doesn't make much sense to go back to physical. Locally installed games load faster and run better, and patches are so huge these days that you're not saving much space by using disks. I'm surprised Gamestop has survived as long as it has.

I think there’s still a market for retro gaming at retail. Probably too late for GS though.
