Television Game of Thrones S08E06 Discussion Thread: Burn them all! (the writing staff) | Our Watch has ended

Lol.. I keep reading this? That it was predictable..? Now don't get me wrong the ending was far from good..

But Bran on the iron throne predictable? I'd have picked Jon.. Sam.. Sansa.. Danny.. Tyrion.. Gendry.. Hell even Davos above Bran as potential candidates..

Jon killing Danny? I mean it's kind of predictable.. but you had lots of people saying Arya would kill Danny or Danny would kill Jon

I figured it was gonna go one of two ways with Dany. They were either gonna go all out psycho Dany, where she'd be killed in the same manner as her father, in the middle of some execution frenzy, to which someone like Arya taking her out would be more likely. Or, they were gonna go the somber tragedy route, where Jon just puts her down quietly. They went with the latter. I also think that regardless of all of our wild theories(shit, I had Grey Worm as a candidate, LOL), deep down I think we kind of knew Jon was the guy who would ultimately pull the trigger. Given how it all played out it, was the most appropriate conclusion. So while it might not have been entirely predictable, it was one of the more natural conclusions to how it played out. It wasn't exactly surprising.

As for Bran, it wasn't too predictable, but again a very natural conclusion, as he's the most neutral of all the characters(other than Sam, maybe) and a good choice to bring peace to the realm going forward.

what would be a better ending?

jon beheaded?

arya kills dany, takes her face and rules as her?

jon is fireproof when drogon tries to roast him?

jon goes mad, assumes power and dragon?

i do with theyd shown bran use his full powers at some point.

i nearly thought after jon lilled dany he would jump on drogon and roast the whole army

in the end everyone was free

ps:

ever watch talk the thrones?

Was it me or was the frame rate very off for the Jon killing Dany scene?? Especially he layed her on the ground.

It was like watching a soap opera.

Sure but not the thunderous impact on the audience as a whole, which is what you want something like that to do

Its one thing if something completely makes sense and is impactful to the story
Its another thing to make that story thread feel big to the audience. And its not just nerdy people, casual people are dissatisfied with the big moments played out - so I'd like to avoid the argument about nerds being mad. And if Jon's parentage was to be taken as one of the big important pieces of information to the audience, it should feel that way or else the story tellers aren't doing their jobs.

But it's going to be subjective, because it may have landed that way to you. But just from reactions I've seen from a range of viewers, it doesn't seem to be the way it landed for most. And in those terms we can look at whether or not Jon's parentage was truly vital to the story telling process, or if it could have just been replaced by something else.

I don't ever care about how the audience reacts when I'm considering if something is well done. Not ever. Audience reaction only serves to prove how entertaining something is.

Jon's parentage wasn't ever meant to be "taken" as anything, it was a driving element of the story and colored the motivations of almost all the action. The reveal was a huge blow to the ego of someone who believed herself to be destined for power by right of birth. What more exactly did you expect from this information? For Jon to be king?

One thought I had in previous weeks was that Drogon could become loyal to Jon. That Dany could try and get him to kill Jon, and Drogon would instead kill HER, for betraying the bloodline. The second Drogon destroyed the city, though, I knew that was never ever going to happen. It would have made people pretty happy here I'm guessing, though.

Tyrion deciding the fate of the realms didn't make sense with him as a prisoner. Should've kept it so he doesn't betray Dany last episode and doesn't give up his position as hand of the king.

I liked it. The idea, I mean. The execution was a bit weak.

I liked the idea of him thinking his way out of certain death after they spent the last couple of years turning him into a fool. Sansa mocking his intelligence previously was pretty hard for me to swallow.

"No, THE WINDS OF WINTER and A DREAM OF SPRING are not finished," Martin wrote in an entry headlined, "Idiocy on the Internet" on his site. "DREAM is not even begun; I am not going to start writing volume seven until I finish volume six."

You won't see any more books out of this fat fuck.

Wonder what that guy does all day.

Would've been a nice touch if Drogon flew over the wall to be with Jon from now on. Idk. Just something.

I'm only using the audience reaction as a measure of it not just being me who the plot point didn't impact.
As for what I expected? I expected it to be discussed again, I expected it to influence the characters more. It just didn't happen that way on screen to me.
Again I get what it was supposed to be taken as, I just didn't feel that through what actually took place on screen. And that might be more of a critique on the direction and entertainment value of the show rather than the writing, and thats fair. I'm only making a subjective evaluation of what that plot point felt like to me. And it felt like a replaceable plot device.

Perhaps my gripe is better aimed at the portrayal of Dany's madness, or break, or evil or whatever it was. Because I agree, that should have been a major blow to her character. it just didn't seem that way to me

But why did Grey Worm even allow him to speak, let alone listen to him? Why did any of these people? Would've made more sense if he were still hand of the Queen instead of just a prisoner.

Been a fun journey with you guys, at least we got some laughs this season. Most of the fun memes have been had so now I am gonna do like Arya and get the hell outta here.

How is it replaceable? It's central to everything and has been since the very beginning.

It didn't seem that way to you?

When Jon tells her, her first thought isn't "I have family" or "I'm fucking my nephew", it's "he has a claim to the throne". She begs him to keep it secret. When he doesn't, she considers it a betrayal. When Varys tells others, she burns him alive. When Jon spurns her, she tells him she's going to use fear.

I literally can't imagine a way it could have had more impact.

CMIIW Only a Captain get to choose in Kingsmoot.

what Samwell is proposing is everyone in Westeros get to choose their ruler.

He shouldn't have, just as Jon shouldn't have been able to get anywhere near Tyrion.

You're right.

The makers of memes seem to have forgotten what a Kingsmoot is.

Bran's 4 g chess really was on a different level.

If he doesn't tell Jon who his parents really are Jon and Dany probably wed and rule together. With the love of Jon and with that the people she never goes full Mad Queen. Jamie and Cersie are able to escape and live in exhile.

He got revenge on the Jamie/Cersei and banished Jon to Wall so he could rule himself.

You're right.

I'm not going to lie and say I'm not catastrophically disappointed with this season.

I'm OK with where they landed, mostly, but not happy at all with how they got there.
