I've just finished watching a replay of UFC 70, in Manchester, England.
Dude was 27 years old, a gold medalist at the WJJC and a silver medalist at the ADCC.
The man had age on his side, and went out there to pretty much be fed to the mythical figure which was known as Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. His only loss to date was to a fellow BJJ expert in Fabricio Werdum, and it was only Gabriel's 3rd professional MMA bout.
He goes out there, and "Cro Cop's" Cro Cop himself - in the first f*cking round.
After that, with the size advantage, striking ability and grappling prowess, you'd think he would have beaten an aging Randy Couture. Unfortunately he came up short, very short!
Just seemed that after that his motivation was gone. He was never a slim guy, but he honestly started looking fat. He then was finished again by Werdum, was knocked out badly by Shane Carwin and dos Santos, before falling to likes of Schaub.
It almost seems that since that loss to Randy, he was never the same, or perhaps Cro Cop wasn't all that special after all, eh?
Still to this day, Cro Cop is pretty much the only "elite" win he has, Rothwell at a push.
Altogether a disappointing turn-out for Gabriel, who at one point could have been champion.
Thoughts?
