I used to get the "Herman" and "the far side" books with all the strips in them. And by the time I was done I was in tears laughing out loud. Now that might sound a bit stupid, but it all starts with a smile, and then a bit more, and after a bit of a laugh, and then just a belly laugh, until you just burst a gut.

My favourite of all time has to be Calvin & Hobbes.

Rantanplan (the prison dog in Lucky Luke aka "the dog dumber than his shadow") also has some nice strips

The only even close to Calvin and Hobbes for me is The Far Side

John Callahan was great because a lot of his work stemmed from sardonic feelings towards his disability.
