This one was in our last "Your favorite movie" poll but picked up nary a vote, and was barely even mentioned by posters in the thread. But I remembered it being a really solid movie when I first saw it in '01 and the poll inspired me to rewatch it. Having now done so, my opinion remains the same:
It is a really solid movie!
Right around the the turn of the millennium Johnny Depp did three films that I've come to regard as a sort of unofficial mystery trilogy: The Ninth Gate, Sleepy Hollow, and this film, From Hell.
But strangely, even though Depp was a popular actor at the time--he had just done Blow and was about to do the first Pirates film--From Hell just kind of came and went, making barely over $30 million domestically.
For those who don't know anything about the film, here's the one-sentence premise:
It's based on a comic, which I actually didn't know until @chickenluver mentioned it the other day:
Personally, I find the film to be incredibly stylish, largely living up to the edict to make "every frame a painting." It just LOOKS phenomenal. The performances across the board are very good as well. And while the film feels perhaps just a tad slow at times and the plot is a little convoluted, I thought it built up an interesting narrative around the Jack the Ripper mystery.
If you enjoy Johnny Depp, enjoy mysteries, enjoy period pieces set in 19th century London, or are interested in the Jack the Ripper story, then I definitely recommend this film.
Strong 8/10.
Anyone else seen it or am I alone my appreciation for this one?

In Victorian Era London, a troubled clairvoyant police detective investigates the murders by Jack The Ripper.
