Those were both new giveaways to the weekly. Maybe Strych picked them up on some a la carte giveaway I missed. Both new for me. I am now at 331 games in my Epic library. Damn.
I'm glad it has a mystery style setting, but I'd love to see more hardbolied detective games where you have to solve/crack cases.
Have you looked at Disco Elysium or Observer?
You play a detective in both of these. Observer has the late great Rutger Hauer as the main character who is a detective.
See this is my issue. I don't think those are detective games. I think they are RPG/visual novels where you play as a character who is a detective.
What I'm talking about is where the gameplay is the hard case work. There are VERY few video games that actually fit the mold. The Ace Attorney series ironically has some of elements of it despite the fact you play a lawyer. One of the only 'pure' examples is something like:

In this game there is no pomp and no fluff. You literally just explore painscreek and collect evidence. Users talk about needing to have a notepad or a pin board while they play to keep track of the information.
What are some of you fav detective games?I'm glad it has a mystery style setting, but I'd love to see more hardbolied detective games where you have to solve/crack cases.

I really liked a couple of the Sherlock Holmes games, namely the Lovecraftian one, forget the name
The BladeRunner game from the late 90's was incredible too.
There have been others, but I can't think of their names. I love a great noir detective story/setting
Isn't this the pre-series to SWAT?There were a few from the 80's from a publishing company called Sierra-Online.

I hear what you're saying, just wondering if you found other games you haven't mentioned that made you actually have to piece things together.Isn't this the pre-series to SWAT?
A fine question my good man. As I was telling @Strychnine there just aren't many that actually weave proper detective work into the gameplay. That Blade Runner game does a little bit. But it's still at it's core a point and click adventure/puzzle game. I've heard that Obra Dinn has some proper detective stuff but I haven't played it.

I've also heard this is pretty hardcore too, if a little low budget.

I never played this game. The first couple of Kings Quest games are among the first pc games I ever played. We used to have to take notes and draw out the map to figure things out. I also remember having to wait for the background image to load, like a printer, for each scene, and dying constantly, especially dying in Space Quest. I know Sierra made Police Quest, but was it similar to those other Quest games?

I heard good things about the Case of the Golden Idol.

One of my favorite things ever shared in this forum was the YouTube Channel MetalJesusRocks. I was just a kid when Sierra was at its peak, so I wouldn't have appreciated it at the time, but it was a trip to hear decades later-- after learning how workplaces could be when one is young-- just what life was like at the time actually working for that legendary company. I love that you can tell just how raw everything was. The suits hadn't yet moved in and sucked the adventure out of everything.Oh my god this is a deep cut for me. In the late 80s I used to watch my oldest brother who is 12 years older than me play all the old Sierra “Quest” games like this, Space Quest and King’s Quest on our old IBM 8088.
Police Quest is exactly like those other Sierra Quest games, just you’re playing as a cop. Same style of gameplay, same sense of humour (at least as far as I can recall) etc.
Classic.
