I see a lot of posters occasionally bring up the fact that Edgar was "gifted" a title shot at 145 after 2 back to back losses. This is BULLSHIT!!!

First of all Frankie had no interest to fight at 145. Sure it seems to be working out for him great but that is besides the point. Back then the featherweight division and Jose Aldo were not getting much buzz at all and Dana was desperate to set up a high profile fight for him. The lightweight contenders had much bigger names. They even had Kenny Florian drop down to challenge Aldo. So ultimately Frankie was doing them a favor because he was still most definitely a top lightweight at that time and still would be.

Another thing, as far as skill level goes the featherweight and lightweight division are neck and neck. There is a reason why for a long time people felt that Aldo could have wore the lightweight belt, even against Penn. Just because Conor loss doesn't mean the featherweight are garbage. And just because McGregor nuthuggers are annoying does not mean Conor is ass!!! He is still a beast!!! And Edgar would still be a top 5 155ers if not the Champ!!!

Frankie vs anyone in the top 5 is a toss up. That's a testament to how good Frankie is. And a testament to how good Aldo really is.

The thing was only about two morons in the whole world actually thought Edgar lost the second fight, and as the case often is those two happened to be judges. The first fight was really close and i seem to recall disagreeing with the decision but also being fine with it, the second fight was an outright robbery. He deserved the title shot because he was the best guy Aldo could face and because he should have been the LW champ still/again but the UFC didn't want a 3rd fght. The key to looking at matchups is to make a well thought out critical evaluation of the merits of each matchup within the particular context, there is no criteria or overarching logic you can fall back on to say who deserves a shot it's always a unique set of circumstances. It's why it was ridiculous to suggest Arlovski deserved a title shot, i don't care about his winning streak look at who he beat and how and be reasonable. Edgar up until Mendes ended up giving Aldo the best fight of his career only losing 3 rounds to 2, it was clear after the fight that it really was the best matchup available.

Agreed. I just don't understand how do many posters can spew that Frankie couldn't compete in the 155 pound division of today simply because of size. And then try to use the Benson fights as evidence.
