Throwback Frank Mir vs. Tank Abbott

Nah ... he had a better chin and cardio.

Think Nog vs Bob Sapp.
Sapp dominated Nog for most of the fight. Luckily his cardio and chin were able to hold up to get the win in later rounds. That was prime Nogs best attributes when compared to any version of Mir. Mir probably gets KO'd with those same shots Bog ate.
He had a better chin, cardio…and better bjj fundamentals. He was very good at incrementally improving position. Not slick, explosive, etc, but technically sound and had the mentality to follow a game plan on the ground.

Tank was actually the betting favourite for this fight

And yet he lost to Mir ... twice.
Once with Mir while rocked using straight up BJJ reversal into a sub finish.

I guess what we can say iis on paper it seemed Nogs BJJ was better but in reality Mir's was better.

Mir was ROCKED with BJJ master on top of him and Mir still reversed Nog and subbed him.

Mirs BJJ > Nogs. There is no arguring that.

This aint a GSP vs Silva what if ... we saw it and Mir still out BJJ'd Big Nog while Mir was rocked.

Still bugs me Dana never set up the ken shamrock vs tank Abbott fight after this. Ken had just lost to Tito four months prior. Instead we got like ken vs kimo II if I recall

Frank Mir will forever be one of the greatest submission heavyweights of all time for me. I truly believed he could have been an all time top 5 fighter in the heavyweight division had he not gotten injured.

One of the fights that made me a huge mir fan. A guy his size being able to have such quick concise mat movements was a thing to behold, especially way back then where it was still brawlers, and style vs style with much more rudimentary styles.

Yes Mir won head to head including a vicious sub. But I’m not basing my rating of Nog off of “paper”. I’m basing it on his actual positions, advancement, and subs in fights. He had a long career before the Mir fights and he fought legitimate world class comp and showed incredible bjj fundamentals.
To say otherwise I’d like saying McGrgegor is more technically sound than Aldo. He won head to head and is a great fighter but you’d be ignoring Aldo’s legitimate body of work.

When Frank grabbed a limb, that was it. One of the best submission artists.

His overall game was never as complete as Nogueira's. Throughout his career he has a history of getting absolutely demolished through his guard.
I'd rather have the more incomplete game - keeps you from getting KTFO and having your limbs ripped off.

The best part was the build-up to his return. He came in the ring and picked up Joe Rogan iirc.

Frank was a good heavyweight. If he hadn’t of crashed, I think his all-time ranking would be so much better.
Yeah, for real. Even still he’s a borderline top 10 all time HW, but yeah I think he’d be top 5 or better had he not had that accident.

Dude lost so much mobility/athleticism from that fight on.

Yeah that accident fucked him up bad.
