I think the truth lies somewhere in between. Two egos clashed and *something* went down.

It could not have been too serious or Dana would have acted. No man, especially someone in his position, is going to let another put hands on him without any apparent consequences...so I imagine it was more disrespectful than anything 'violent'. I just can't see Dana completely making up such an encounter. Embellish? Oh, sure...but fabricate from nothing? Nah.
