Imagine Gane beats Lewis tomorrow via decision, and then goes and decisions Francis in December to win the HW title if that's when they decide to make the real title fight.

Now imagine that Usman goes in and finishes Colby in devastating fashion.

Who's FOTY? The guy who outpointed three top 5 contenders and the champion in one year, or the guy who notched three brutal title defenses.

Gane easily. That would be 4 wins against top 5 ontenders(one of them is a dominant Champ) in less a than year.

But its easier to be active as a contender than it is as a champ. 3 title defenses in less than 12 months is impressive for a champ.

Judging on the past…. When it comes to fighter of year they rarely take that into account. So I don’t think it’s matters

Both of Gane's fight this year were snoozefests while Snoozeman finished both of his fights by KO/TKO as the champ. It's not even close.

Gane needs to pull that trigger and ended this saturday night with something special.

Kinda hard to get FOTY without any POTN in your pocket.

It's not easier, it's that champs have less incentive to be active and more to lose.

If Gane beats Lewis, the price he's going to pay is a MIND-BOGGLING level of inactivity.

He's going to go from fighting 3 times a year, to fighting once a year, twice IF he's lucky, but very seldom.

Unfortunately that really won't be great for his development - and it's kind of a shame, but he'll be wearing the shackles of UFC's PPV scheduling and the fact fighters at that level are all trying to earn more money by threatening to fight less frequently.

Ironically, despite what the top managers think, that suits the UFC as they're prepared to wait indefinitely on their top earners to fight. Dudes like Ali and Jon Jones himself (since he left FRM) are happy to sit on the sidelines if the UFC don't pay silly money - simple answer: the UFC eventually pays them better, but pays them as infrequently as they can.

I thinks more of scheduling thing champs have less cards that they can fight on and the UFC likes to duress then out. At least that’s the impression I get in interviews

It's also that they hold quite a bit of leverage and have more negotiating to do on salary and fight schedule. A contender is only concerned with reaching the top so they can be in a spot to command a high salary. A champion is in that spot and their value is dependent on holding that title. So where a fighter on the come up might fight through injuries, do short notice fights and fight for less, a champion is going to demand their worth, make sure they are 100% healthy, and only want to fight at specific times that fit their schedule.

Meh. I think that depends on the champion. There are champions who are company guys that do short notice, fight with injuries, and Etc.
