Former NHL Fan turned to MMA

The haters are out in the comments of that Manziel dunk video. Good lord.

lmfao

A Level athlete right here.

Self-besmirchment.

I would definitely rather watch a NHL game than a UFC fight.

lol they both suck and you should feel bad for liking either one of them.

The hard working Johnny Football is more explosive than the most athletic ufc champion.

Matt Cassel would excel in MMA. That's really all you need to know about that pseudosport.

1. This A-Level athlete stuff is nonsense. People on here honestly seem to believe that all there is to MMA is athleticism and any pro athlete can come in, go through a training camp and dominate and become champion. That is simply not true. I see Brock Lesnar as an example to outside fans but that's not really the case as he was a very accomplished collage wrestler.

Sure athleticism is a huge factor, but the idea that all "A-Level athletes" pass up on MMA for other sports is foolish. Just because Jon Jones can't dunk a basketball doesn't mean anything, he's a fighter not a basketball player. The heavyweight division is full of crappy athletes sure and even the light heavyweights don't have all the best athletes but look at the small guys. Those guys are in amazing shape, are very very fast and well conditioned. They may not be able to QB a super bowl team or pull off a great dunk but there's no disputing that they are in fact, top athletes or they wouldn't be where they are.

Back to the heavyweight division though, look at Cain as your example. Sure there are many guys with varying degrees of athleticism in that division but look who's on top. A fast, very well conditioned athlete. Most of the top heavyweights are not in fact "giants" but smaller (235lbish), faster heavyweights. The guys who are crappy athletes are also crappy fighters.

2. I don't care about violence in hockey. I don't watch hockey for the hits and fights at all. I'm a fan of old school, tough hockey but I do not live for the violence. I myself consider myself to be a very skill orientated player on the ice when I play and in all honesty, physicality isn't a major factor of my game. Toughness however is something that I feel is not only important to yourself but to everybody. To me it just seems this is gone away because society as a whole is rejecting everything masculine.

Look at car culture how that's gone. 30 years ago what was cool will now get you told off at a gas station by a yuppie soccer mom with a Prius. Long gone are the days of fuel sucking 4 barrel carbs, loud dual exhaust and big v8's with even bigger cams that lay rubber and haul/get ass. What replaced them? Feminine, plastic cars with good fuel mileage.

Look at body hair over the years too. Up until about 15 years ago, it was totally normal for a man to have body hair and now look at the stuff they market to us men. They want us totally shaved and more and more women every year think chest hair and even arm pit hair and leg hair is disgusting.

It just seems that everything is being wussified. Two kids fight at school and the cops are called instead of giving them detentions. Your a bad parent if your son or daughter physically stands up to a bully, something I'm sure most of the older people on here have done once or twice in their lives. Hell, instead of trying to teach our kids to stand up for themselves, we wear pink and cry about everything, creating a society of victims with no real skills for dealing with their problem.

Anyways, sorry about the big rant. I just felt as if MMA was one of the few things left that hasn't been watered down by the liberals (yet). Hockey has it, football has it and sure it is player safety but I'm sick of hearing about it. Invent better helmets, take the hard caps off shoulder pads and make a bigger ice surface and your problem is solved and the game will be more exciting with much more skill on display. In fact, I would love that. Every chance I ever had to play on a bigger ice surface, I spent with a grin on my face. Something about having the time and space yourself is fun but it's even funner to watch. The olympics were great and I had a lot of fun watching the hockey, regardless of who was playing.

So yeah, I'm not a "just bleed" guy although I can understand how you would get that from my first post.

Sounds like you have F-level attractiveness.

If the big hits and fights are the best part of hockey to you, you were never really a fan imo.

I don't thing that's fair to say at all.

Speaking for myself, the physical aspects of the game were my favourite parts of hockey as well, but I also enjoyed the game a whole lot beyond just that. I started watching hockey in the 70's and invested a good 20-25 years in it where I was a huge fan. Was a frequent memebr of the Jets' live audience when they were in their first incarnation and went to a shitload of games (Yay for the time it cost $8 for a noseblleed seat or $20 for a great lower bowl seat). Bought as many pre-season magazines I could find and probably read them all 2 or 3 times as the season went on. Was subscribed to Hockey News for a lot of years too. And watched the games on television whenever I could, which was at least a few times a week. The physical part was my favourite, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy most of the other aspects of it, whether that be a great goaltending exhibition or both great offensive & defensive plays. Because I certainly did enjoy that stuff as well. A lot. Just not as much as the hitting & fighting, which I absolutely loved.

Blades of steel was a phenominal game, take out the fighting and it was just ok
