Sorry, here's the American version. Of all the Japanese films this is my all-time fave.

    Martyrs
    Switchblade Romance (High Tension)
    Irreversible
    Frontieres

They are some good examples of violent French horror.

    Other European horror I recommend would include;

    Them (2006 version)
    The Orphanage
    The Devil's Backbone
    Let the Right One In
    REC
    Suspiria

I could mention more but I don't think you are looking to buy your friend every film I like haha :p

An excellent horror/psychological thriller movie, with more to it than just jack-in-the-box shock factor.

There is an US remake called The Uninvited, but as it usually is, the original is far superior. Most horror movies you see from Hollywood are remakes, so if you ever want to watch a horror movie and find one created by Hollywood, but it has recieved shitty reviews, try to look up the original.

The Eye (Hong Kong) is a great horror movie, along with Shutter (Thailand).

This is the only movie I've seen in my adult life that has damn near given me a panic attack.

The japanese versions of "The Grudge" and "The Ring". You will not be sorry. The japanese make some of the world's best horror. "Let the right one in" is a great film as well, but it is not the same kind of horror as these two.

i've seen frontiers and martyrs and they are two of the worst movies i've watched. Martyrs has the distinction of being the absolute worst piece of shit i've ever seen.

I don't like the genre in general, but Ils at least tries to incorporate some classic horror elements.
