This is why I left my first answer so vague. I've been in countries where we had to strip down berettas, glocks, m4s, aks and their variants in order to see what weapons we actually had that functioned...they are a tool, there is no single 'best'...but there are general weapons that can be multi-use which have already been covered here.
I've spent most of my life with firearms, yet I can tell you now the average American gun hobbyist probably knows more about the inner workings and materials than I do. So unless you're planning on becoming a hobbyist and collector who enjoys tinkering (I don't), then you might want to just keep things simple. Stick to owning something that functions, how to carry out the immediate actions and recognize basic faults...and train on the platform regularly in order to be good enough for it. The majority of weapons outperform the owner in my opinion...
There is only so much shit I can do with my motorcycle and car before I let the professionals handle it (mechanics), same with weapons (armorers).
