I hadn't seen this before today -- was going through some old Rocky movie clips on youtube and stumbled upon this interview in which Sly was talking about how he and MBJ were discussing what it takes to be in "the rocky family" -- which apparently involves taking shots from heavy hitters during filming the fight scenes.

Apparently Sly had real life fighter, Tony Bellew who played Ricky, "put a little hip into it" and MBJ was all game up for it.

Here is the interview on Fallon (skip to 1:48 to get to the juicy part)

Glass chin.

I woulda ate that like mom's spaghetti.

Something was odd about the head movement. It's like he turned into the punch after getting punched, and the way he landed looked off. Although I don't really know what I am talking about.

If that's real that's pretty fucked up actually.

The dude makes his living being attractive and memorizing stuff.

Holy shit. So basically what Andre Ward did for pretend, Bellew did for real?

Stallone from the old school, man. Dude kept egging on big f'n dude Dolph to hit him viciously and took a trip to the hospital due to swelling around the heart for his troubles.

Stallone's morning routine:
His bathroom mirror opens up and there's a spring loaded boxing glove that knocks him out just like that

If there is any movie series I would love to see turn into a cult, it would be The Rocky movies.

How does no one in this thread get that they were shooting a scene....?

No mj didn't really get slept

The dude is throwing what looks like a 25% arm punch and his head did some weird spring twisting action, not a real KO.

Is the Hulkster part of the Rocky family after taking that chair from Paulie?

Speaking on US sports personality Bill Simmons’ podcast about the incident, Jordan was adamant what we saw was 100 per cent authentic.

“The first couple of times we tried to do (the punches), we tried to it with the slips, and it’s slow motion, so you can see the misses — the space between the punches,” said Jordan.

“All of a sudden, you just hear this snickering from the corner, and everybody’s like, ‘What?’ Sly goes, ‘Man you’ve got to take it.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘No, you’ve got to take a real punch.’”

“I had to really get hit. And legally, Ryan (Coogler) — he’ll definitely tell you this — as a director, he can’t legally say, ‘Take the punch.’ So I had to willingly step up and say, ‘Alright, I’ll take the hit.’ But I definitely got peer pressured.”

“The hit is pretty epic.

“I was smelling canvas.”
