There's this myth going around that Demetrious Johnson is holding back the flyweight division due to his drab personality. It's a very convenient excuse by the three flyweight fans who post here on Sherdog.

The reality is that flyweight fights of all types are not marketable. I remember folks being bored to death when Joseph Benavides fought Ali Bagautinov, a fight between two top contenders. Those who dislike the flyweight division (the vast majority of casual and hardcore fans) don't dislike it because of DJ. They dislike it because of the hobbit nature of the division.

Cejudo needs to win tonight so that this truth goes from 95% undeniable to 100% undeniable.

they said that about 145 division not so long ago...

If Verne Troyer could do it, so could Mighty Mouse!

Do you really believe that someone with McGregor's charisma and a dominant record couldn't sell PPVs? I disagree. If it can be done at 145, it can be done at any weight class if the conditions are right.

When was this?

Regardless, 145 proved itself overtime. In contrast, flyweight has failed to catch on despite being around for four years. It's inherently unmarketable, DJ or not.

No it didn't. McGregor proved himself over time. Once he is gone, its back to the prelims and FS1 cards for anyone below 155. Hell, even the 155ers top out at main eventing Fight Nights these days.

It truly is the personality and fight style. The man below is 5'4 and fought at 125lbs and he is one of the most popular boxers of all time:

DJ not only has a boring fight style, he also has a boring personality. His nemesis Dodson is more exciting, but he's a weirdo which makes it hard to take him seriously.

Aldo, Mendes, Edgar, Korean Zombie, etc., made the division. Conor just took it to higher level. Props to him but the division was already popular. It would be the equivalent of saying that a Conor-esque fighter made WW popular ignoring Hughes, GSP, etc.

Boxing and MMA are two different sports. I can turn around and say US football and basketball prove that only the HW division matters.

Maybe popular on sheredog. Aldo vs Korean Zombie sold 180k. Aldo vs Mendes 2 sold 180k. People don't care about that division outside of Conor.

is there a limit? how low can you go weight wise.
IMHO low weigh classes are fun because of speed / cardio but soprts wise only

Just bleed wise I´d rather see a HW fight since they tend to end quickly

But don´t underestimate the power of HYPE and HATE, it can do magic

Since Dodson and Lineker moved to BW, DJ is the only FlyW I enjoy watching consistently
