Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor PBP (Discussion)

Have you even made a single positive comment on sherdog about Conor ever? Be honest.

I don't live vicariously through MMA, I'm not emotionally attached to it.

Conor is one of the most accomplished fighters of his generation, and without doubt the most successful. He's the most successful MMA fighter in the history of the sport.

He wasn't competitive last night. He was left to blow out his arms, like someone green would be apt to do, and then casually walked down and brain bashed when Mayweather decided it was time. Floyd seemed to have a good sense of humor and attitude about it all, and smiled and I believe took his time because he quickly knew he was never going to be in danger.

GGG or Canelo are not small guys like Mayweather, they are closer in size to Conor, and have an order of magnitude more power than Mayweather.

If you want to see Conor get serious brain damage again, let him keep boxing. Keep up the delusion.

Realistically, this was one of the two best scenarios Conor could get. The other scenario was lasting the whole 12 rounds.

Keep in mind I'm saying realistically, so don't bother with a KO win. Selling it from the angle that a guy with no pro boxing experience:

- Got in the ring with an all time great, and got to win three rounds.
- Didn't hit the canvas once.
-Lasted way longer that many of us expected, and you can bet that from now on we'll hear him say over and over that if it wasn't for that "early stoppage", he would've gone the distance with Floyd.

Not to mention that this might've opened the door for other UFC belt holders to try doing the same thing, going after the big $ of course.

Probably basing their case like, if he was able to hang in there with a P4P great, I can do the same against a high ranked opponent. Big mistake I know, but if something was proved last night was that a big marketing campaign can overcome anything.

Great fight. I enjoyed it and Conor did better than most expected.

Ref has seen Rocky too many times. Saved Mayweather from Conor's furious return.

Final thoughts on the fight after a slow-mo rewatch:

With all due respect to Conor, Floyd carried him the whole time. It's true that McGregor landed more punches than most do against Mayweather and he did win the first three rounds, but that's largely due to the fact that Floyd never really felt threatened enough to turn on the defense and he was clearly letting Conor tire himself out in those early rounds. It's not unusual that Floyd takes a few rounds to calculate his opponent anyway.

It only takes one viewing of McGregor-Diaz II to know Conor doesn't have the gas tank to go 12 rounds and Mayweather, being the experienced veteran he is, knew he could drag him into deep waters with relative ease. In the post fight interviews, you'll hear Conor constantly praising Floyd's composure, and the reason for that is he just watched Money barely break a sweat while he gave it everything he had, with many advantages, and still fell short by a mile.

McGregor DID have a couple noteworthy moments, though! That big uppercut he landed in the first round was as clean a shot as Floyd's been hit with in recent memory, and I think he really hurt Floyd with that body shot at the beginning of the 9th. Mayweather calls it a low blow, and we don't get the greatest angle of it, but it looks like a clean body shot to me. It's possible that Floyd was hamming it up trying to sell the low blow, but either way, Conor shot himself in the foot when he used the opportunity to take Floyd's back rather than land some meaningful punches.

Last point of note: I'm quite sure McGregor was studying Vasyl Lomachenko footage for this fight. There's a great video on youtube called "Vasyl "Hi-Tech" Lomachenko: The Tricks" and I noticed Conor trying to use at least three of them, including the one where he knocks down your guard to create an opening with one hand, then hooks ya with the other.

I believe that when the dust settles and this fight is yesterday's news, Floyd will admit that this was his easiest fight in the last 10 years of his career. With that said, Conor deserves all the respect in the world and earned every penny of his big payday.

Whats crazy is that Conor only lost because he doesnt have a gas tank.

Yeah but you see, the thing is, if you give him a gas tank he loses power. You can't have everything. Change one variable, you need to change them all.

it was a low blow, i rewatched it as well.

Conor was embarrassed, Floyd didn't even fight defensively like usual, he had no footwork and walked him down a good portion of the fight.

Floyd was literally playing his game and winning. Let him win the early rounds and assess the situation learn his tendencies and then picked him apart.

Wayyyy too many dumb MMA fans and casuals thought he had a chance a lot of you should be ashamed that you thought he could beat the GOAT of boxing.

And even now all you hear are excuses for his pitiful performance, SAD!

I caught it again in HD and came to the same conclusion. Not in the balls but below the belt and I don't think Floyd was actually affected by it.

Your Mcgregor is a hoax fellas. Easy come - easy go, Khabib and Ferguson will destroy him too.
Not MMA, definitely not Boxing, for his next career PR and acting is his best bet.

I give mad respect to Conor. He put it on him half the fight, not even considered a pro-boxer, never had a match. My fear was he's going to embarrass himself, but he held his own for this boxing match. Also, that was a 'boxing stoppage' not an mma stoppage for sure. Absurd to give Floyd a TKO for that stoppage.

Bet we won't see Floyd in the cage anytime soon.

He did a hell of a lot better than I was expecting him to. Landed more punches on Mayweather than Pacquiao did, in his first professional boxing fight.
Let's not forget that Conor, as impressive as he is at times, most certainly is not THE best striker in all of MMA. And if he did this well against one of the defensive boxing GOAT's, I'd argue that MMA striking is quite a bit better than a lot of people give it credit for.
Oh, and Conor would've absolutely wrecked Mayweather under K-1 rules. Add just one more set of limbs, be it kicks, knees or elbows, and this fight would've ended very very differently.

The ref was annoying as fuck. He basically held all of his little pre-fight speech to Conor alone. He did have a slight whiff of bias.

I thought the stoppage was early but it was a better match than I expected

Good match :)
I can't say Conor did better than I expected cause I was the win saying 49-1 :)
I did, also, say that I'll acknowledge his defeat, so here I am.

He had his moments, first 3-4 rounds plus some things.

The only thing I'm somewhat disappointed is that "he let" Floyd use probably one of the oldest tricks there is: "Let him tire up and then start" -_-

That said, it's waaaaay easier to sit infront of the screen and say stuff like that, so no biggie.

Hats off to both. Floyd is a great boxer, deserves 50-0 and Conor deserves all the respect and thanks for the entertainment.

I'm 100% confident that Conor will, yet again, be 10-20% better in his next fight (if it's MMA) and we're back in business :)

To all the haters (towards any of them two): Keep eating and puking that hate. It's all you're good for.

I smiled, I laughed, I cried. Conor is ATG. All time Great. F Nate Diaz.

Damm right. If Floyd ducked like that with K1 rules, he would be in a coma still
