Thought it would be only right to post up some positive Werdum energy after his terrible loss last night.

Background on the fight:

This fight was the second of the two fighters, Werdum had won the first battle via 3rd round TKO (punches).

Both men were coming off of losses.

Werdum lost his UFC debut to Arlovski, where he was out-struck standing for 3 rounds. He was competitive, but Andrei had too much for him. Gabriel had just been finished by Couture in a title bout.

The fight:

Gabriel leg-kicked the hell out of Werdum, dropping him several times with low-kicks. Gonzaga then scored a takedown, but didn't do much with it. Werdum later caught a high-kick from Gabriel and took him down, finishing the round with ground and pound. Razor close first round, but I'd have scored it for Gonzaga.

Werdum in the second round had more of the "bull-rushing", which kind of made me laugh in retrospect. He implemented his clinch and knee'd Gonzaga several times to the head. It appeared that Fabricio had realized this was a really effective way to gain victory, and started to nail him badly.

Before you knew it, Fabricio was pulling Gabriel to the ground, up against the cage. It was a bad spot for Gonzaga and he tried to survive, but unfortunately he was pounded to a stoppage by the ref.

Closing comments:

This is another amazing example of how good of a fighter he is, and depicts how far his striking has come. He had very little way to win this fight, but still found a way to get inside and do damage.

Last night was a bad night for Werdum, the worst of his career, but I hope he'll be back. Guess old habits die hard, as he resorted back to the bull-rush last night, which was so prominent in his early UFC/PRIDE days.

PS:
Why does Rogan always say:

"Werdum has improved so much in his striking under Rafael Cordeiro"?

He's been with Rafael the whole time, he was with him in this damn fight and all he had was some knees!?

Anyway, decent fight.

Worth a watch if you're a fan who wants some Fabricio positivity!

I'm not a huge fan of Werdum, I was rooting for Stipe, but hey... nice thread nonetheless. Good analysis of a very fun fight to watch.

Werdum looks so incomplete in this fight.

I actually remember not liking him much but hating Arlovski, Gonzaga and Vera. I always found myself somehow cheering for him, indirectly.

Also want to know why the UFC were obsessed with him being in the UK. He was on 3 consecutive UK cards.

His clinch has always been nice.

This fight also showed me how little heart Gonzaga had.

It's fun to look back on these things.

Congrats for making a post that is a fresh idea, instead of the 1000th of something.

Before the fight Werdum showed nothing but cockyness
I thought he overlooked Stipe a little
I hope he is humbled or he'll turn frank mir really quick if not already

He also rushed forward in a similar manner against Arlovski if I remember correctly.

On topic, this is a good fight to rebuild Werdum's confidence but not anything else. Gonzaga's days as a top competitor seem to be behind him.

Oh yeah, I would never want to see this fight again, that's not what I'm saying at all.

You're totally right about the Andrei fight also, rushing forward with his chin up and just random straight punches.

My bad, I didn't realize their fight in the UFC was actually a rematch, that's why I thought you were suggesting one.

Not really a positive but when jds kod him, it was on of the best uppercut koes id seen at the time.

Imo , The way he played possum with Fedor was pure brilliant.

Been saying for ages Werdum matches up bad against any half decent technical striker, he looks too stiff and rigid, he has good pressure and cage control, pretty durable..great clinch and knees, good low kicks but he looks desperate at times with his hands, doesn't look very smooth or relaxed and doesn't use lateral movement.

I can't believe how much people were buying into his new and improved striking, it's leaps and bounds above what it used to be but against an elite striker with his combination of slow predictable take downs and basic fundamentals in muay thai, they're not enough for him to implement his true strengths in jui jitsu.

I've never really thought his striking was elite, but I honestly didn't think Stipe's was either. I have a better opinion or it now, but I respect his power more than his actual boxing skills. He also has zero striking outside of punches.

Even when you look at the solid strikers Werdum has fought, he's about even in terms of wins and losses - he definitely hangs with them.

What he did to Cain, Browne, Hunt doesn't just evaporate overnight.

Greatest fight to watch to understand the improvements in Fabricio's striking is the Travis fight. I honestly don't know what went wrong in this last fight, didn't look ready to fight at all.

Maybe because he was still living in Spain? i remember seeing a Spain flag in one of his fights in the ufc from that age.
