Edwards defeats Broome in Baton Rouge mayoral race

Republican Sid Edwards has been elected Mayor-President of Baton Rouge, defeating Democratic incumbent Sharon Weston Broome in a decisive victory.

Edwards, a first-time candidate, secured 54% of the vote, including a similar margin in early voting, marking a significant shift in leadership for the city

"I want to thank Mayor Broome," Edwards said in his victory speech. "The hardest seat to be in is the incumbent because you have a record. She spent almost 36 years in public service, the last eight as our mayor. It would be remiss of me if I didn’t thank her for her service and running a good race."

High school football coach and first time candidate beat the two term Democratic mayor of Baton Rouge.

Crime and jobs are major issues for most people and Democrats still don't understand it.

Surprising...maybe some people are starting to wake up.
Btr has been a mess since so many moved over from Katrina. I'm still super surprised at this. Will see how he does. Hopefully bring crime down.

No. People will just vote something different occasionally when shit gets Baton Rouge bad. They'll get back to voting the way they did when a single Republican doesn't solve all their problems.

Well, I was thinking more established politicians vs non establishment people instead of Democrat or Republican. I am assuming since he is a "first time candidate" that he isn't a lifelong politician, but I take your point.

Well... Baton Rouge lost a big chunk of the city awhile back when citizens left who were actually paying the taxes that the city was wasting
I didn't know that went through. Im from 35 miles north of BTR and still have a lot of friends there. It was the haves vs the have not imo. I heard some peeps talking about it but thought it was still just a proposal. They were tired of the leadership no doubt...

Edit: looks like it went through in May. Will see how it goes.

I was thinking him never been involved in politics before this might have gotten people sick of the establishment to vote for him.

Might be why a republican mayor won…

Possibly but the city is majority black. Maybe they decided on a different path. The new city is different. St George. Will see. They need help and may have decided on a change.
