Elections First Presidential Debate Discussion: 9/26/16

Who won the debate?

  • Total voters

Last night I got worried when I saw that a handful of Trumpsters had the dignity and common sense to admit that he lost. I thought maybe they'll learn from this. Glad to know they were in the minority.

It is funny. I remember Dems in '12 being more accepting of the loss. Could be wrong, just what I remember.

You think Trump will fail to learn from this? I'm predicting his stamina holds out a lot better next time, at the town hall debate. But maybe he will come in without a solid plan again.

Depends on what you mean by accepting. They took it as what it was, a loss (though not nearly as bad as Trump's), and were definitely able to see the reasons for it. Obama has always been known to have a good mixture of gravitas and energy but the brought none of those to that ocasion.

As for the next debate, I think last night was mostly because of the person he is, not jus that he came in unprepped (though that was noticeable). If you push his buttons he will get sidetracked, he is not eloquent in a scenario where the audience is silent and simply tries to absorb what he's trying to say (as opposed to people getting fired up in a rally) and quite frankly he just doesn't know his shit about relevant subjects that will always come into play (foreign policy for one). You can't change that overnight.

Cmon bro. There's fat americans on both sides of the line.

I almost posted a pic of Micheal Moore and Rosie odonnell but thought that would be too disgusting.
Was it a picture of them making out?

I agree that he could never get there on substance. Where I think he can get there is with the tone he took from the beginning, when he was calm, rebuking, and fatherly. He only needs a few policy statements (he should tie stop & frisk to the new supreme court "We'll overturn it") and as long as he keeps on the offensive and doesn't take bait, he can win a debate other than on merit. That probably won't happen though. I guess he'd have to stop most of the childish interjecting too.

It means Trump's going to win the election.

Sure if people are robots could vote multiple times. There's one scientific poll on there, as far as I can tell, and it shows Clinton won.

Two off the top of my head.

- stop and frisk did nothing to decrease crime
- there is systemic bias/racism in law enforcement across the country

Both of those are true. There is some interpretation. Compare that to a real lie, like when Trump said a few times "I never said that" when he did, in fact, say it.

is there a possibility he sandbagged that debate?

One of the most interesting things, thinking back on last night, is how low the Trump bar for truthful statements has been set. We're spotting Trump like 10 lies here before we even bother digging in on them. The only thing Hillary lied about was claiming how close Iran was to getting a nuke, which wasn't technically even a lie. Donald lies nearly every time he speaks, and it's barely noticed.
