Multiplat Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (PC release announced Jan 23rd, 2025)

WARNING: do NOT watch this trailer if you have played the original and you don't want to be spoiled in a major way.

Discussion for those that have watched it WITH spoilers:

I'm a bit torn on this trailer. On the one hand I like seeing new content and I've been looking forward to viewing it for weeks now.

But it's pretty much classic Square trailers all over again. I really don't like that this basically confirms they're going full metaverse multiple timeline here and making it a huge part of the game. Multiple timeline narratives are the absolute fucking worst for me. It's such corny, lazy writing. I get that they're trying to create a new experience which isn't a 1:1 model from the OG, but whenever you introduce these elements into any narrative, it loses its power QUICKLY when you overdo it.

And totally unnecesary, too. At the end of FF7 Remake you have destroyed the Whisper Harbringer and it's said that because of this, destiny and fate and all that stuff is changed. Cool, I get that. It opens up an opportunity to diverge from the story and shake things up a little bit. But then why introduce this whole "Zack is alive in a different timeline" arc? They could've just emphasized the altered story a bit at the end of FF7 remake and just left it at that, allowing their script writers to be able to diverge without introducing this multiple timeline bullshit. It's so corny, it makes things unnecesarily more complex.

Eh it’s really not that bad. We all knew that already, the final trailers are the ones you want to avoid.

Yeah I guess it only dawned on me after this trailer that they were truly going all in on the alternate timeline shit... Such a bummer but other than that I liked the trailer.

Swerve - Sephiroth will "kill" Cait Sith's Mog doll this time instead. I hope. <Lmaoo>

r as dedicated as the remake is I kind of feel bad for the staff if they are expected to remake every square inch of he original. How to cut corners without cutting corners.

My biggest gripe thus far was the overt forced intro to Sephiroth in the first one. He was this mysterious voice in the wind for the first part of the game but in this one he pops up every 10 mins doing matrix shit.

Yeah, I kind of think it comes with the territory of it being a remake and so people already being very familiar with Sephiroth, so they felt they had to bring him in earlier.

For new players it does kind of ruin the buildup, because in the OG the first time you feel his presence is when he casually slaughters basically the entire building of a military compilation without making a sound. That’s scary.

When did sephoroth want to rule over the planet?
He’s always wanted more power by absorbing the lifestream. He also deeply despises humanity, I don’t know if he ever directly says that in the OG but it’s obvious he would be in charge if his goals became reality. In the movie he expands on it and says he’d use the planet as a ship to travel around space. I don’t think anyone knows what his goals are in the remake yet but even going by the OG it’s not wrong to say that’s want he wanted

I kinda just figured he wanted to turn the world into a space ship and use it to terraform other planets. Can't remember at this stage but I thought Jenova was basically a sentient meteor flying tolhrough the universe crashing into planets so seph was in keeping with tradition.

Jenova is an alien. She is basically a virus that destroys planets and then uses them to travel elsewhere. She and Meteor are not the same thing although she did land on Gaia on one. Meteor is what Sephiroth summons using the black materia to wound the planet and draw the lifestream out.

Cait Sith looks great in this

That's what I mean. I thought sephiroth wanted to use the planet to spread to other worlds similiar to how jenova landed on the planet. Or that he was basically recreating Jenova through the whole game so he could co tinge that cycle. I wouldnt exactly calling it wanting to take over Hythe planet like its pinky and the brain. It just seems like this is more nuance being removed for the sake of streamlining.

I think you're probably just reading too much into this line. There's no indication that the game is going to be dumbed down. If anything I'm worried about the opposite with the introduction of Zack and new characters. Anyway, Cloud is the one saying the line and not Sephiroth so it's not like he's inside his mind. That's just how Cloud and the gang see things and they want to stop him. Plus Sephiroth is crazy so maybe he doesn't even know what he truly desires.

I’m curious to see how Red XIII and Cait Sith will perform in battle and what my ideal team composition is going to be.

I found Tifa’s damage to be batshit broken in Remake, Aerith’s maybe being a bit higher but mana dependant and I never really like playing mages, I just wanna get in an enemy’s face, dodge their attacks and beat the shit out of them.

Back when I played the OG decades ago as a young kid I pretty much only ever used Cloud/Tifa/Barret because I liked their dialogues the most. Now that whole party will be there, that seems kind of redundant.

Supposedly Red XIII is some kind of hybrid tank? Cait Sith was pretty much useless in OG but perhaps he’ll have his value in Rebirth. Anyway, I’m stoked!

Haven't played the 1st game, so do we know 'Rebirth' will be the final entry in completing the original FF7 story? No chance they'll try to stretch it out into a third game?
