what’s the best example of this? Or even a fighter being petrified of standing and just grappling his opponent to stay safe

Per Google AI:

Merab Dvalishvili was accused of stalling during his fight with Jose Aldo, but he ultimately won by unanimous decision

Explanation
  • Dvalishvili was unsuccessful in all 16 of his takedown attempts against Aldo.

  • Some say that Dvalishvili stalled during the fight, similar to how Mario Bautista stalled during his fight with Aldo.

  • Dvalishvili outpointed Aldo in the fight, draining Aldo's energy and causing him to slow down.

I remember that in TUF 4 finale between Serra and Lytle, Matt spent a lot of time stalling Lytle against the cage and stomped Lytle's feet before Usman made it cool

Another funny one was Aoki vs the cross dressing cosplay kickboxer Nagashima in a mixed rule exhibition fight. In the kickboxing round Aoki acted like a jackass and avoided fighting at all times. Then in the MMA round, Nagashima sent Aoki to the shadow realm as Aoki was going for a takedown

Literally any of Bruno Santos wins
Not hating the guy, but his fighting style was similar to a point based bjj fighter

Merab

Against Umar. With all the lame showboating especially at the end
7 of 30 takedowns landed, 260 significant strikes thrown, neckbeards outwrestled and BTFO

Merab does the opposite of stall, the guy is always moving. Jailton Almeida vs Derrick Lewis is an example of someone pure stalling.

Man it'll never get old watching Aoki slammed into the stratosphere. He's the fighter I most love to hate on as I think he truly is one of the best grapplers in the sports history, but he makes himself so unlikeable you just want to root against him. The hammerlock arm break will go down in history.

Mohammed Usman vs Junior Tafa.

Horrible scoring, Horrible reffing and far and away the stand out example of winning a fight by stalling.

Usman officially landed 7 sig strikes but i sure didn't see that many.
12min control with no damage done.
