Claudia was dominating Joana last night until after the 2nd round when Claudia's gas tank was empty and she became a punching bag. She did show heart and durability though taking 3 rounds of punishment. Claudia is known for having a poor gas tank and many observers stated that if it went to the later rounds Claudia would start to decline, which she did. If Claudia had worked on her cardio and improved her stamina she would most likely have worked her way to a UD. Obviously having good cardio is part of training and is up the fighter. If Roy Nelson can have decent cardio at 265lbs. then no one else has an excuse not too. It's professional to have good cardio.

When I think of cardio costing fighters I think of Carwin blowing his wad attempting to put Lesnar away and getting submitted, Hector Lombard gassing attempting to put Neil Magny away in the first after hurting him and gassing badly and being TKO'd. Cain Velasquez who's actually known for his cardio not being smart enough to train at altitude for his fight against Werdum and gassing badly and being submitted.

If Hector, Claudia, and Carwin had better gas tanks they would have most likely won their fights and been the new champion.

So who are fighters who would be champs if they had better gas tanks?

Claudia would have had to have been a machine to keep up that pace from rounds 1 and 2. That would have been extremely difficult.

BJ Penn is my answer. He could probably have beaten GSP the first time and Matt Hughes the second time.
(I know he was champion in two divisions)

you'll see it again tonight with amanda nunes she nearly beat zingano then she gassed

Good answer. I remember seeing BJ getting ready for a fight and while his opponent is warming up he's eating a burrito on the couch.

Not the best examples. If other fighters also had unlimited gastanks, they could also start up like Hector, Claudia or Carwin or Sage. Smart fighters conserve energy for later rounds, instead of dominating for a couple of rounds.

Thats part of being champion, not just train technique or power, cardio too, Claudia got tired by the 3rd round, Rumble got tired against DC too, he might had been able to wrestle with DC if he had the cardio, at least to a decision, is part of the skills, Claudia pushed an incredible pace, got tired and Joanna was just warming up.

It's not about the gas tank, it's about being efficient with your energy.

Nunes, watch that pathetic fight against Valeri again and see Nunes willing to pay $1,000 for a breath of air.
