As we all now, getting paid is all about bringing in viewers and attracting media attention to the UFC and to a lesser degree fighting abilities - eventhou these two things are highly related.

We live in a world of social media. If you are not in social media, you do not exist. This is something most fighters get and most are active on twitter, instagram etc. Some are doing a really great job like Weidman, Northcutt etc. who all got interesting instagram accounts to follow. But doing just these things don't really put you out from the rest or catches people already interested in the sport.

Another thing is going the TV-route. Page Van Zant is on Dancing with the Stars - a great move that will put her out there. This was before her doing TV-shows but in her loss against Thug she made 40,000. In comparison to her fighting skills she earns alot of money. Now, obviously, she is cute and has alot of going her way because of her looks but she also pays alot of attention to her media appearances and is building her brand. Gus is another example of how a fighter is building up his brand by being on national TV. Now in Gus case, he also has alot of going for him by being the only really successful fighter from his country(with Latifi coming up). But at least he is doing something.

But let's say you are a young man kicking ass and is just signed to the UFC. What can you really do if you are not looking like Page Van Zant and posses her dancing skills? This is an open question and I would like your input. Personally I would advise something like:

Become a f*cking youtuber and do videos about your daily life. Youtube are full of bums having 100 000+ followers making fitness videos or about their lives. Why are noone jumping on that train? If you actually have some young, somewhat charismatic dude who won a couple of fights and you can follow him in his life training, cooking and living the "fighter life" etc. that would bring in viewers and out-of-the-octagon sponorships. Just imagine some young guy like Jake Mattews. Not only would be reach the demographics of male and females 15-25 around the world but it would also help him build up his australian following. The potential spread of youtube videos is amazing.

Another great example is what Mighty Mouse is doing. He is a likeable dude who is a great twitch broadvaster. He got 42,000 followers and is growing. Him doing twitch probably helps him keeping his xbox deal and makes it sweeter too.

I would like a Rory MacDonald and Ricci fashion channel. It might be cringy but would attract attention.

One great example of self-promotion are the old, very well-made docu series from Overeem. http://www.alistairovereem.com/docu

I promoted my girlfriend who has one breast larger than the other and entered her in a wet t-shirt contest...the promotion was on point, she came in first and third!

You can try and promote all you want but if you don't have the personality for it, it's not going to work.

You can't teach or fake charisma.

You're not a real celebrity athlete unless you're banging a Kardashian or Dana White

DJ lost his X-box deal once Reebok took effect. It sucks now that he has a shirt and something to promote related to video games that he has to wear that Fight Kit garbage. At least he gets 40k from it and not the pennies other fighters make to humiliate themselves.

Mark Hunt couldnt be promoted that way for the longest time,he could NOT talk in front of cameras. He got alot better at it,but if he hadnt, you wouldnt even bother trying, because of how he used to be. In Japan it wasnt neccesary for him to talk, because the fans just wanted to see him fight, and were aware of his wars in k-1 so they had alot of respect for him and his heart, and dont care if he doesnt talk or goes on social media,which..didnt really exist when he was in k-1 anyway.. but in america, fans dont care about what happened in japan,in fact they just cant wait to find a reason to discredit something that they hadnt seen at the time to relieve themselves of the effort to look into it.

My marketing professor would have a field with you TS.

How many sports people are crossover stars? 1% maybe.

how do people not hate guys like TS

These guys spend a lot of time training. Marketing looks simple, but it takes an a lot of time in planning exactly what to say. You also have to be free enough to extinguish any fire. Most people are not capable of doing it properly and training. There are exceptions, guys who are talented and everything they say is gold but for most people that is not the case.

MMA fighters could get a person to do that but then you have to spend money on someone, when they don't make enough. That person could also ruin their image, or they spend all this money and not gain anything.

"When you're in Hollywood and you're a comedian, everybody wants you to do things besides comedy. They say, 'OK, you're a stand-up comedian -- can you act? Can you write? Write us a script?'... It's as though if I were a cook and I worked my ass off to become a good cook, they said, 'All right, you're a cook -- can you farm?' - Kenny Florian
