Robbie Lawler had 10 losses when he won the UFC title. Other notable fighters who've won belts with a lot of losses are Randy and Jan with 8 losses, and Bisping, Dave Menne and Glover with 7. Has anybody had more than that, or any champs of any other big org?

Handy had 8 losses when he beat Timmeh for the HW strap.

Jan had 8 losses when he beat Reyes to win the LHW belt.

Glover had 7 when he beat Jan for the LHW belt.

Edit: Just realised that all if these are in the OP.

What was Serra's record when he knocked GSP senseless? (I know he lost to shonnie and BJ)
What about Shogun when Jon killed him? (He lost to Machida and Coleman)

Good thread. Randy (44) and Glover (42) get bonus points for being old AF but pretty sure Lawler had more losses than anyone else when he won the UFC belt.

Sonnen had 10
Pennington had 8
Sonnen does not belong in this thread, unless, you are counting him beating the MW champion who missed weight back in WEC and they played him with the rules, didnt got the title because of it, he had 9 loses at the time (according to tapology).

Maurice Smith had 10 losses when he beat Coleman for the UFC title.

Good catch. I note Tapology has Maurice Smith with 10 losses when he beat Coleman, whereas Sherdog fight finder and wikipedia have him with 7. I honestly can't remember some of his matches prior to that but I'm inclined to believe tapology over the other two sources.

Tapology has Lawler also with 10 losses when he won the belt so I think the answer to the OP is those two.

Jorge Masvidal had 13 losses when he won the BMF belt.
