I'm not going to say that Brain Ortega falls into that category but Ortega is notorious for being down 2 rounds and pulling a sub out of his ass in the 3rd round.
And now they I'm thinking Romero fits into this category kinda. I won't say he's the nail because very few fighters have actually "beat him up" but "3rd round Romero" became a thing for a reason. He was down rounds against Brunson, Kennedy and Weidman before brutally stopping them in the third.

People saying Diego Sanchez never watched him in the late 2000s or early 2010s. That guy was a hammer. He was called the nightmare for a reason. He's brutalized way, way, way more people than he's been brutalized. He might be the bad end of a joke now but we're talking about a guy that was a top 5 WW and a top 5 LW for just under a decade.

I did a thread earlier this week on The KO Artist (Hammer vs. Nail), and it got me thinking, who’s the fighter who was most notoriously known for being on the nail end of the equation... I’m sure you guys will have some great answers, please include GIF’s to support your post, for me one fighter comes to mind for being spectacularly KO’d in in prime form... Olaf Alfonzo

Well, I respect the fuck out of the guy, and I’m one of his biggest fans, but I definitely think Darren Elkins is a very apparent example. He’s one of those guys who i immediately think of when people ask “who’s the toughest” or “who has the most heart”. The guy has taken some serious beatings, and to his credit, he pulls out wins sometimes in those same fights.
Ya “the nail” is not just a guy who suffers the most brutal KOs. In fighting terms it’s the guy who can still be trying to win and able to win after the worst beatings. Or just “fight from behind” and basically force fatigue to be a factor by absorbing damage.
Nick Diaz is probably the goat nail. Because he did it at such an accelerated pace that he could have guys broken in 5 minutes.
Diego Sanchez has to be up there for the danger he could still present after suffering 10+ minutes of damage.
And we must mention Royce Gracie. The original nail.
Honorable mentions Nate Diaz, Maldonado, Elkins, Paul Craig, Frank Edgar, Evan Tanner, many Pride legends like Saku and Minowa Man, and Anderson Silva. For all his dominance Anderson was very relaxed and comfortable when he did get into dangerous positions against Newton, Henderson, Lutter, Sonnen, Belfort, etc.

i came here to say this. i don't know how Big Nog wasn't the 1st guy mentioned, he's like the poster boy for taking savage beatings and coming back to win in most of them.

This is probably more than anyone cares to hear. But he also was hit by a truck as a kid, and was told he’d never walk again (hence his back scar).
It’s not just inside the octagon, the dude was dealt shit hands his entire life, and he became the heavyweight champion of the world in the most brutal sport out there. If anyone who wants to be inspired, or likes a good comeback story...Nog is as good as they come

yeah, there's something special about Big Nog. Lil Nog is not even comparable at all in terms of toughness. Big Nog is on a whole other level.
