Fight Strategies that Baffled you/ Gameplans you didn't Understand

The worst strategy of ALL TIME is Irish Edmond drilling Conor guillotine to defend TDs against Poirier.

Sometimes, it's not always clear whether it's a stupid mistake or dumb game plan either, like someone mentioned Rumble vs DC, but it was Rumble going full retard not the game plan, but this one, they DRILLED IT, and the fighter CAME THROUGH, to the greatest perfection of complete idiocy right into jaws of defeat.
That’s not why conor lost though. It is why rumble lost (not that he would have won….). And it was rumble executing HIS strategy in the cage. The gameplan is the gameplan but it’s still the fighter that executes their own strategy in the cage.

Loads and loads that I can't think of, but this one always comes to mind..

Andre Soukhamthath when O'Malley was there for the taking on one leg and he decided to wrestle.

Though I guess it was more down to capitalising in the moment rather than a game-plan.

I wonder if it was some form of arrogance from Tate and her camp. Maybe like a "nothing beats wrestling" mentality, that's the only reason I can think of, I honestly think she could have beaten Ronda if she kept it striking.

Or at least made it closer rather than getting tossed launched over and on her back every single time, plus with judo throws you almost always end up already passed any guard when you come down to the mat.

What fights have you seen before that had you scratching your head about a particular fighters gameplan or approach to the fight?

Off the top of my head one of those for me is Robert Whittaker vs Israel Adesanya.

Instead of jabbing, throwing leg kicks, mixing in takedowns, etc. he was constantly throwing looping overhands and headkicks at an opponent who is amazing at leaning back and also has a pretty significant height advantage.

Another one is Tippy Toes BJ Penn vs Edgar in the 3rd fight for obvious reasons lol.

What else ya got?
Diego in the BJ fight - long before Maia spammed 20+ undisguised and unsuccessful TD attempts on Woodley, Diego tried for 5 rounds - and not of his own volition, as you cam clearly hear his coaches yelling "take him down Diego" the whole time.

BJ Penn-Edgar 3 still amazing me every time, WTF was BJ thinking?

I actually think it wasn't too bad. Mainly it was Conor going full retard and actually jumping it. IF he had kept it standing Poirer was either seconds away from abandoning the TD or he gets choked out. Standing guillotines are the way to go honestly, either the opponent abandons and try's to escape and you have successfully defended the TD, or he goes deeper and you have a good shot to choke him out, while still remaining standing hopefully.

IDK why Conor actually jumped it though. YOU NEVER FUCKING JUMP A GILLY, ESPECIALLY ON THE FENCE. Dustin learnt that one a couple of times the hard way lol.

I was at tippy toes BJ vs Frankie.

He had been a favorite fighter of mine (already on the slide at that time) and his walkout was an out of this world experience. Then...

It was so bizarre. Like he literally thought, you can't reach me all the way up here, and Frankie was like, bro you are just as short as me when I put you on your back.

Not that it's ever been the most crisp, but Brunson displayed some horrible boxing against Whittaker. He was just throwing sloppy haymakers and getting pieced up in the process. That's why I knew going into the izzy fight, he was gonna get cooked fast.

Definitely the Penn Edgar 3 came to mind - I was like he seriously wants to be a tippy toes boxer now!

Israel vs Whittaker makes more sense than people think. The way Israel evades a lot of strikes is fundamentally incorrect and Rob was trying to capitalise on that.

Clay Guidas strategy vs Gray Maynard. I didn't understand that shit
John Dodson did it a few years later, with similar result. It's like they decided to stick-and-move without actually sticking anything.
