Holland is a province in the Netherlands. People know Holland because it is where Amsterdam is. There is both a North and South Holland in terms of provinces. North Holland is where Amsterdam is located.

It was never called Holland. It's just people were always calling it Holland by mistake and correcting them doesn't change that.

Edit-It was briefly called Holland from 1806-1810. Doubt this is relevant.

I don't think it's offensive(maybe it's annoying to Dutch people who don't live in Holland) so much as it's a mistake.

I was in croatia in 98 too. But in the southern part, a lovely little town called Lovran I think outside Rijeka. Was pretty decent in that part at least, but I saw the rest too
