Now that Fedor has knocked the shit out of Fronque Mir its time to discuss his next fight against another steroid guzzling american, Chael "THE AMERICAN GANGSTER" Sonnen. This match up is very interesting and its silly to think this fight will be a walk in the park for Fedor.
I dont think there will be any easy fights for Fedor in this tournament at 41 years old. I think this is the kind of match up that could really show Fedors age. Against Mir, Fedor was the smaller, faster fighter. Fedor was in danger of being submitted and possibly hurt by a heavy strike but it wasnt the type of fight that would expose his aging and lost speed as much as a fight with Sonnen could.
The Sonnen fight is a lot different because Fedor will be the bigger guy. Fighting a smaller, little bit faster guy, with olympic alternate level wrestling, a legitimate purple belt in BJJ and every steroid known to man pumping through his body and he will have a very solid round in him of shooting power double legs, fighting in the clinch, and wrestling for dominant position. On top of that he has a sneaky guillotine that he submitted Shogun with almost easily and Shogun is a very good MMA grappler.
Fedor is going to have to prepare for this fight. He is going to have to prepare wrestle hard for the whole first round. He will also have to be careful and watch out for those sneaky shots Chael throws while feinting takedowns and coming back up for punches. He dropped Anderson like that and with the condition Fedors chin is in today, those surprising shots could definitely hurt him and even change the course of the fight.
At Fedors age it wont be easy but If he can stop Chael's takedowns for a whole round and scramble and get back to his feet if he gets taken down the momentum of the fight will shift in his favor where he will most likely TKO a discouraged Sonnen who quits anytime his plan A doesnt work and lays down and looks for the ref to save him like he did with Jones and Rashad.
This is doable for Fedor but it wont be easy IMO and hes going to have to be prepared to wrestle that night. Sonnen wont be going for double under hooks like Mir, he will be shooting doubles and wrestling and looking to land sneaky shots on the feet. Interesting match up. Less dangerous fight than Mir but also more complicated which could cause problems. Cant wait. The build up will be epic and the Russia vs America narrative will make it even more dramatic.
War Fedor the GOAT!
