Pretty much everything they do is quid pro quo. We should probably change some of the laws there, to create some distance between lobbies and access, and also between access and legislation. But we have to do it without violating free speech, in a way that doesn't prevent more grassroots groups from accessing politicians too, which is difficult to do (and would require a liberal supreme court). Panamaican had a really interesting idea, which is to physically remove most of the politics from Washington DC. So that there aren't literally lobbyists living next door, or renting office space next to our reps, and things like that.

Two reasons. First, the stated reason that it is a safety measure. Gas is flammable, explosive, and poisonous. Some states take the position that it should be handled by paid employees with safety training rather than drunk Cleetus smoking his cig while he fills up his ford.
The second is a practical one. It creates jobs for low skilled workers.

The west has had a long fascination with the occult. The Reagan's were into the occult and heavily into things like astrology which is part of the new age occultism most often seen by regular folks, astrology, tarot cards, divination, etc.

In spring of 1988, White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater acknowledged publicly what journalists had whispered for years: Ronald and Nancy Reagan were devotees of astrology. A tell-all memoir had definitively linked the first lady to a San Francisco stargazer, confirming speculation that started decades earlier when Reagan, as California’s governor-elect, scheduled his first oath of office at the eyebrow-raising hour of 12:10 a.m. Many detected an effort to align the inaugural with promising heavenly signs. Fitzwater also confirmed the president’s penchant for “lucky numbers,” or what is sometimes called numerology.
There was more to the story than the White House let on. In a speech and essay produced decades apart, Reagan revealed the unmistakable mark of a little-known but widely influential scholar of occult philosophy, Manly P. Hall. Judging from a tale that Reagan borrowed from Hall, the president’s reading tastes ran to some of the outer reaches of esoteric spiritual lore.
Hall, who worked in the Reagans’ hometown of Los Angeles until his death in 1990, attained underground fame in the late 1920s when, at the age of 27, he published a massive codex to the mystical and esoteric philosophies of antiquity: The Secret Teachings of All Ages. Exploring subjects from Native American mythology to Pythagorean mathematics to the geometry of Ancient Egypt, this encyclopedia esoterica won the admiration of readers ranging from General John Pershing to Elvis Presley. Novelist Dan Brown cites it as a key source.

Manly P. Hall was also connected to Aleister Crowley. Hall was deeply into magick, was a high ranking Freemason, and was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He wrote books such as Ceremonial Magic and The Sacred Magic of the Qabbalah.
In addition to that Nancy Reagan would bring an astrologer named Joan Quigly to the White House. She was paid by a 3rd party so nobody would know she was on the payroll and she read the charts for the Reagan's for 7 years.
You gotta realize, this wasn't just so Reagan could get his newspaper horoscope in person. This was about timing and the alignment of the planets. Its why Reagan, if you read above, was sworn in at 12:10am.
Quigley later said that over the next seven years, she issued guidance, for pay, that went far beyond mundane scheduling to matters of diplomacy, Cold War politics and even the timing of the president's cancer surgery.
Nancy Reagan downplayed Quigley's influence when news that the first family had an astrologer was met with a firestorm of criticism and jokes. But the scorned Aries astrologer struck back.
"I would participate in a more intimate way," she said in a 1990 Times interview, "than the publicly recognized insiders of greatest importance."
"I was responsible for timing all press conferences," she said, "most speeches, the State of the Union addresses, the takeoffs and landings of Air Force One. I picked the time of Ronald Reagan's debate with [Jimmy] Carter and the two debates with Walter Mondale; all extended trips abroad as well as the shorter trips and one-day excursions."

The Clinton Foundation has been used as a for-profit operating under charity for years. It started off with a company called CESC (Clinton Executive Services Corp). CESC is also the company who paid for the email servers.
Here is an email discussing the potential for exposure when the proposition to move CESC into the CF building is discussed. Why would they care about exposure? Because it would bring investigation.

I'm also starting to worry that if this story gets out, we are screwed. Dk and I built a business. 65 people work for us who have wives and husbands and kids, they all depend on us. Our business has almost nothing to do with the clintons, the foundation or cgi in any way. The chairman of ubs could care a less about cgi. Our fund clients who we do restructuring and m and a advising the same just as bhp nor tivo do. These are real companies who we provide real advice to through very serious people. I have to agree. I think there WJC may have some real serious conflicts if we start to make too many rules. It may be time to update some procedures but we can not ignore the nexus of WJC's life.
Also. I signed a conflict of interest policy as a board member of cgi. On it, I wrote that my wife designs bags for cgi, and loses money doing so plus donating her time.And that teneo represents 4 cgi sponsors, 3 of which teneo brought to cgi. Oddly, wjc does not have to sign such a document even though he is personally paid by 3 cgi sponsors, gets many expensive gifts from them, some that are at home etc
I could add 500 different examples of things like this and while I removed lasry bc they are all on the offense, I get the sense that they are trying to put some sort of wrong doing on me after the audit as a crutch to change things and if I don't mention things like lasry where they all have issues, I may regret it

I’m sensitive to that (which is why I’m asking) but those CHAI Stats are on nearly every public listing of CF accomplishment. I’m want to make people think twice about calls for dropping grants to CF or return the money and the HIV/AIDS work hits home in a way that other stats don’t. Plus it’s international work. I’m concerned about saying we used money to fund healthy schools (because we didn’t use the funding for that)
